Race day for Saturday's opening round of
the Fenn Cup dawned an eerie red, cutting visibility to just a few hundred
metres, in a half-hearted imitation of a few days earlier, when Sydneysiders
awoke to find the iconic harbour bridge and opera house shrouded in an eerie
Baghdad-like pall for the first time in a generation.
In-form Gold Coast paddler Jeremy Cotter has pipped rival Tim Jacobs on
the line to take out the first race in the four-event Fenn Series on
Sydney’s northern beaches this afternoon.
When Dean Gardiner first contacted Surfski.info to announce the formation of the Fenn Cup series, the plan was for three races and $20,000 prize money. Since then the series has grown by another race and another $40,000!

I have always wanted to fit an elliptical rudder to a Fenn, particularly a Mako 6 as it is my favourite ski. I can paddle an Elite but I prefer the 6 for all round stability and performance particularly in chop. Its main weakness is that the shark fin loses bite because of the ski's rocker and the fin's proximity to the tail causes the odd broach particularly in big swells.

Rudders are a critical part of any boat’s design – and in my opinion many of the rudders on surfskis are sub-optimal, to put it mildly. But at last a manufacturer has got off their butt to offer a wide range of rudders for different conditions.
