Head to Head

Hmmm...

Off the top of my head:
2004 SA World Cup, Cape Town: Oscar beat Dawid
2005 World Cup, Perth, Australia: Oscar beat Dawid (Dawid's ski sank in the first race; Dawid was DQ'ed in the 2nd - left out a buoy - having come in behind Oscar.)
2005 Cape Point - Dawid beat Oscar
2006 SA World Cup, Durban: Dawid beat Oscar, coming second to Hank McGregor in flat conditions.
2006 Dubai Shamal: Dawid beat Oscar who came second, holding him off in the final sprint.

Can anyone find out what Dawid and Oscar's head to head record is for the last 2 or 3 years? They must have competed against each other a few times. The results should clinch it. - Gary Kroukamp

A friend and I did the Miller's to Simonstown run the same evening, leaving Miller's at 5:30pm. We have done this run many times, often in winds up to 25 knots and had some really exciting runs. This was very different. In hindsight we made the wrong call to go. The wind was 30 knots and the swells were huge and confused, coming straight into the bay. We struggled to get the runs, and on the few occasions I did catch a swell I invariably pulled out as they were too big, 3m-4m straight down and I was scared of pitch-poling. The Simonstown route differs from the Fish Hoek run in that the refraction of the waves from the rocks is much worse. In my opinion the swell was just too hectic in combination with the wind. We completed the run but this was not a fun session. A few lessons were learnt that night. What your article reinforces for me is that there is such a gap between the average paddler and the top guys. For Dawid to beat his record in those conditions is truly astounding.
