Hey Irritated Reader .... I saw with my own eyes

Irritated reader... I was in that race between the Islands and when Lewis came past me, the water was so clear, I looked down and could see he had a little propellar under his boat. I've heard that it's just near his big toe on the right foot pedal and he just gives the button a little tap and down comes this little prop and off he goes. It's true Irritated Reader... and I empathise with you, Irritated Reader, because gee I was so IRRITATED when I saw that. Lewis you are a LEGEND! Rob you are a STAR! Irritated Reader ... you're just irritated aren't you. Stay loose 8) - Witness

Saffas do not need to suck sour grapes. They are head and shoulders ahead in terms of top talent & depth looking at the turnout of their home races. Yes they are not the best losers in the World - but true winners seldom are. SA to clean up in Durban 100%...cannot see it any other way. Molo was won by the best guy on the day & you will not hear anybody who was there say otherwise. The story is complete poke! Drop it. ;D - GD

What if Oscar had won, would the same story have been put on here? I learnt a lesson some time ago, and that is dont believe everything you read.

I have never met Lewis but from people I talk too he is the nicest guy you could ever meet. The only thing to me worse than cheating, is having your peers think you cheated! I hope I meet Lewis oneday so I can shake his hand and congradulate him on what was a great victory.

The right to editorialise and comment

An Australian perspective on a slightly different issue on editorialising and reviewers giving honest comment (the seas are too big on the east coast to paddle just now, and don't mention the Rugby!!).
Recently a food reviewer in Sydney was taken to High Court around a sharp and pointed review of a now defunct restaurant. The court found in favour of the restaurant. My point being (as has been raised by reviewers and diners alike here in Sydney) is that as consumers and fans we look at the relative merits of skis, how races are run and how people compete no differently to those who dine out and want an honest view on the relative merits of that product, service, or a good feed.
I don't think this site should apologise for calling things how they see things, or reporting and putting a perspective on issues out in the public domain. Slander or defamation is a serious legal issue, but doesnt seem relevant in this instance (sorry to say to my irritated friend).
Keep the site and the honesty flowing to all us fans and consumers - John Beattie

Good Work

Rob, you guys do a great job. This site needs to report the news - good and bad. The resson we log on and surf it - is that we can get what we want here - news, comment, debate, results etc etc. Nobody wants a 'dead' site. Keepo being bold, keep digging into what is really happening in our sport. You reported and alligation - and quickly put it right with direct quotes from the guys who were there - job done. I would far rather follow this process on the site - than here 2 guys gossiping about it in the pad club. I know what is going on now. As for irritated reader - chill brother - the story on the 'copy cat ski' was followed up with a story of another new guy - who showed cad drawing's, wooden plug's - the lot. So we get it all here. As for it being a SA Propoganda site - bull. I wish I read more about the guys in other countries. What are they doing about supplying content to showcase their offerings? All good, for all of us - and I hope as many of you boys as poss come to try the Dubai Shamal. Beers on our club President - I promise. - GD

"The Article"

Gameplan Media are a media placement agency, media buyers in other words. They research products and the medium and suggest slots for their customers to buy airtime at. Now wouldn't you prefer for a nasty rumour related to Surfski paddling to be heard and settled here as apposed to some marketing company's press release? It would have aired somewhere eventually; count on it. As most readers know this forum has access to and is read by nearly all of the lead bunch at the race in question and despite the sensitive nature of the "allegation", for want of a better term, I feel it was handled competently. And the editor, editorial, editorialize comment I'm sure would have been taken more seriously without the spelling mistakes.... ;) ;D - GraemeT

>> Why weren't the "facts" looked into BEFOREHAND?

Here's the thing - that first story was a general press release and is already on other sites - and probably in newspapers too. I figured it was better to get it up here, where at least people have the opportunity to comment and express their opinions - unlike on other sites.

So I don't think we owe anyone apologies for posting it - it was in the public domain and clearly of interest to our readers. And as soon as we could, we talked to people who were at Molokai and posted this follow-up article to give a balanced view.

But hey, we're learning all the time and I think we could have handled this issue more sensitively - don't think that we don't take the comments on board.

If anyone needs to have a long hard look at themselves, its irritated reader - just relax man! This is the most informative and up to date paddling site on the planet - Rob and Alain are doing an amazing job at keeping the content relevant and interesting - this often means posting articles that are bound to raise the hackles of some readers out there - if people like irritated reader have there way, Rob will give up working so hard on the site and we will all be losers.

Rob - great work dude, surfski.info is an amazing source of info and reading enjoyment - dont let the the nonsense from irritated reader get to you. - Surfskiboy

Wow, irritated reader ;D really needs to get a grip on reality... firstly, your criticisms are unfair and plainly misdirected. second, unless the article has been changed, it does not attack Lewis Laughlin at all not does it make any allegations. It is dead straight reporting with hardly an opinion at all.
Sounds like Gameplan have it wrong.. any info as to the source of the comments Rob?

Heated debate is lovely to participate in and read!
Here's how I see it: it was a rumour, it was refuted by all there, it's over.. move on.. Well done Lewis, well done Rob..
Keep it coming and goodbye - GraemeT

The Media are there to report on what they see , hear and what interests readers not what you like to hear .
Lay off Rob and other personal accusations. Have a go at the Media if u want by all means, i'm sure you wont be the first. And I'm sure you still read the daily papers tomorrow if u are upset by an article from today's paper. Oh and dont hit at the guy at the net ..........even if u are losing its just not tennis !

I've re-titled this article in an effort to make it clearer what we're trying to say.

The original article "ARB Surf Ski World Cup - Strong Reaction to Laughlin Withdrawal" was a general press release that we did not write. This response was an attempt to gather facts from people who were there and I believe it shows clearly that the other paddlers do not think that Lewis did anything wrong. - Rob Mousley

Available Christmass Card

Companies like Game Plan Media obviously have a business plan, unfortunately for us their business plan probably sees an oportunity in creating a lot of ill-feeling across the international surfsking fraternity - Is this really a South African (sic)company as I'm sure this pretty embarrasing to all Safers. All I can say is that I hope GPM include kite flying in their next business plan update!.

By the way, with Game Plan Media now officially struck-off my Christmass Card list I will have a spare Christmass Card available. Is their anyone out there, preferably a surfskier without hairy legs, chest and with an over-flowing bank account, Porche in the drive, owns 'original' surfski or as close as possible to an original, don't need to drink pretty, etc. (and for those funny dudes in Dubai Graham doesn't qualify!), that neeeds some affection 'cos Santa will deliver a personalised Christmass Card to you!

Rob & Alain, keep up the good work and keep writing it how it how you hear it.

Regards,

IT REALLY LOOKS LIKE THIS-CREATE A LITTLE FRICTION WITH THE PRESS, AND
ONE GETS PRESS. NO DOUBT LEWIS WASN'T WAKE RIDING...HE WAS IN FRONT!
GEEEZ, I'M WAKE RIDING EVERY CHANCE I GET WITH THE OCEAN SWELLS, AND IF ANOTHER
COMES MY WAY...ON MY COURSE TO THE FINISH LINE...I'M GONNA HOP ON AND RIDE!
NOW BIKE RIDERS DO THIS ALL THE TIME...AS A MATTER OF FACT, IT'S
PREFERRED PRACTICE....SOMETHING CALLED DRAFTING.
I AM WILL BE HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS OF THIS YEARS
MOLOKAI RACE AS REPORTED..CONGRATULATIONS LEWIS LAUGHLIN!
OH YEAH ROB MOUSLEY//WE CAN'T THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THE UP-TO-THE-MINUTE
REPORTING YOU PROVIDED...HOPE TO SEE YOU IN S.A. SOME DAY...
