Yes it was compulsory along with a flare and whistle. Just part of the saftey requirements. First place in each leg gets 1 point and second gets 2 points and so on down the order untill 20th received 20 points. So the competitor with least points wins overall, with points being allocated each day. It changes the way in which you race each day rather than time being the consideration it is placing that is critical. Congratulations to everyone who finished, the conditions were really brutal!
