drills

ray, basically oscar recommended, well stated loudly, that i had to teach my body to sprint at 17-18 kph on flat water for 2 min. or so...he suggests 20-30-40-50 strokes on (full sprint) with a similar number of recovery strokes to let your HR recover fully. (a stroke is 1/1, 2/2, etc.) oscar does heaps of downwind paddling so that's a short, intense interval session right there. but basically he suggests doing some form of speed work each session UNLESS you're too tired and then he's big on working on technique/style. how often and how far depends on the event your training for, your age, fitness level and goals...but, to state the obvious, there are heaps of folks on this site far more knowledgeable about this than me. i do type real fast though...finally, if i wrote a book on surf ski paddling it would be about the guys and scene and not on training although that would be a small part...that's the provice of guys like oscar, barton, mocke and mcgregor...finally, derick, sorry mate for butching your name...look forward to seeing you in NYC but please don't be too fit.... - Joe Glickman

Speed drills

Hello Joe. I too have too much base endurance without enough speed. What drills did Oscar recommend and how often should they be done. Also, are you ever going to put out a book specific to surfski training? - Ray
