Australia has always had squads of sprint racers but dont have any long enough rivers to have a tradition of longer races. In Western Australia we only have a few rivers that flow high enough to navigate for 2-3 months a year so you cannot really have long races. South Africa has a great community of paddlers all around the country. I trained for a couple of years with Keith Fenn and the boys on the Nahoon and also raced down in Cape Town mid week in kayaks out near Muizenburg when I was staying there. South Africa has so many long races like the Duzi, Breda, PE-EL etc with massive participation. I think the long distance ski paddling must have sprung from this. South Africa also has other long races like the Comrades. I think there must be a preoccupation with maxiumn pain going on in the South African Psyche somewhere with longer races the norm in South Africa! - Craig Fisher

Its always nice to have an African blow-in show up for the Saturday session, particularly a good oak like Bazzle. Its just a shame that on that Saturday we had the easiest session I can remember. It is usually Deano's house of pain. Lekka shots Baz.Kiff....the guy on the left. - jackal
