remounting in those waves

I've had some experience remounting in 30-40 knot winds and it's not as difficult as it seems. For instance, the stronger the wind, the larger the waves, and therefore, the more sheltered you are from the winds when you are down in the trough between the waves while remounting. And, most of the time during the remount, you are in the troughs.

The wind strength right near the surface of the water - where you are sprawled out during the remount - is less. You notice this on your paddle blade, too i.e. once the blade gets to a certain height off the water, it's a huge sail, but near the surface of the water, and there is not too much push from the wind on it. - nell

Remounting?

I'm left wondering though, what chance would you have had of remounting your ski in those conditions?

I have remounted skis in challenging circumstances before - but the thought definitely crossed my mind in Hout Bay during the side-on blast.

In both cases (ie the squall in False Bay & the hurricane blast in Hout Bay) that extremely strong gust didn't last very long - and I've had to remount in 30kt winds before, so I'm pretty confident that I'd have been able to get back on.

But I intend putting some remount practise in - my straddle remount is not very good and the sidesaddle remount can be a bit precarious (and slow). - Rob Mousley

Halo effect

explain the strange halo in the water that surrounds the boat

Yep - the water on the lens of the camera due to the rain. I now splash the lens at intervals to keep it clear.

your unbalance hand placement

I need to put some tape on the paddle! - Rob Mousley

Hectic

What an awesome article! After hearing of the big winds in the Cape, I was just waiting for the paddling stories to start coming through. Not sure which story is more off the wall - this run, or the Mockes surfing trip? Stuff like this is what makes our sport great.

I'm left wondering though, what chance would you have had of remounting your ski in those conditions?

Anyway, great article, and I'm looking forward to the review of the Synergy. - Craig van Heerden

Sureal rider of the storm....

Rob would you be able to explain the strange halo in the water that surrounds the boat from 6min20s onward in the millers clip?

Something else I picked up is your unbalance hand placement! Not sure if you are doing this deliberately to accommodate for the wind direction as you start holding more on the left and move onto the right by the end of the clip?

You guys are doing a sterling job promoting our beloved sport. Pity about the cams not being able to show the actual angels at which the runs are ridden, but that's no one's fault. This footage is great for showing our mates from upcountry what it is we keep ourselves busy with when not at work.

And to answer your question: Yes, they are very interesting.

Oh!! and I personally see no need for the expletives to be deleted - can we assume that they rhyme with luck or duck ?? - Louis Carstens

Watches everywhere...

Yeah - Forerunner 305 on the boat; watch on left wrist; Forerunner 405 on right wrist! I usually put the 405 onto the footstrap next to the 305!
(The 405 is a review unit - I've done the review, will post it shortly.) - Rob Mousley

Rob,

In the Hout Bay clip, you had your Garmin on the foot-strap and what looked like a watch on your left & right wrists? I'm sure you have a logical answer to this other than just having an issue with time!

Thanks for the footage! ;D - Ed Menzies

The Synergy must be nice and stable, you were padding it sideways downwind in that squall. - Alain Jaques

All comments welcome...

The clips are very rough - and even on blip.tv (which is better than youtube) they show quite grainy. The original footage is a lot clearer.

But are these interesting? All comments/suggestions welcome. - Rob Mousley
