I've read a bit on the Elite, but not any detailed reviews. Not having a surfski now, I'm looking for one.
Most of my paddling is in pretty flat water, and my previous boats include a Millenium, Speedster, and V10.
At 6'3" and 240lbs, it seems much easier to find a surfski that is sized appropriately, much easier than a K1. Again, my goal is really for fitness training, with stroke refinement, and the occasional race. Can anybody provide a review on the Elite, especially with regards to flat water.

Best Regards,

Greg

Hi Greg
There aren't many of the skis around so you'd need to contact one of the few people who have them.  We're hoping to do a comprehensive review early in the new year - getting input from some of the guys who are paddling them.

especially with regards to flat water.
Having paddled the ski only twice but having listened to what Dawid Mocke, Daryl Bartho and Lewis Laughlin have to say, it would appear that the top speed is not much different to the Mako6 but the effort required to maintain high speed is less.  Given that the ski has less rocker than the M6, this would make sense.

The ski is definitely a little less stable than the M6 - but I'm hoping to spend a little more time in it in rough water before making a definitive statement on this.

The top guys all say the ski is very nice - but the problem is that they're all sponsored, all have superb balance and all do well in races no matter what ski they use!  If you're an elite paddler, I'd have no hesitation in recommending the ski - but you'd do well in V10, Red7 also.

Not much help I know - sorry!

Hi Rob,

Forgot to ask in last post about the Elite,

Did they take a little rocker out of the tail ?

Follow a smoother line off that 'angle' spot 3' back from the bow ?

Or change overall ?

Is the rudder in the same spot ?

Thanks.
Aloha,

I took a couple of photos of the two skis side by side after the Dubai Shamaal. The Mako6 is the one with the flames.

Thanks for the photos Alain there perfect.
You can really see the differences, even if they are minor.

Right on, thanks Alain,

A picture we would all like to see is one boat over the other, both in the same frame, shot straight on from the side.

Ex. Get two step ladders, and place boats one over the other on the rungs to shoot. This would show difference in rocker Fenn is talking about and we would like to see.

Aloha,

The rudder has moved forward; the bucket has moved back.  Rocker has been reduced both in the nose and tail.  Hull length has not changed.

We'll take measurements and publish them along with some photos that will illustrate the differences...  Stay tuned.

I couldn't help but notice the boats that both Jasper Mocke and Barry Lewin were paddling at the Perth World Cup race...they looked like the new Fenn's and not their usual sponsored Custom Kayaks Icon.

Come on Barry/ Jasper, give us a comparision!   Wink

Actually they weren't on the new Fenns - they were paddling Millenniums!   Grin

So before the 6 and V10, did most of the racers use the Mill? What were the other comparable options
if any?

The most popular ski on the market (in SA and Australia at any rate) used to be the Fenn Mako; Then came the Fenn Millennium.  It's probably accurate to say that most of the top paddlers used the Millennium although one or two (like Pete Cole who just came second in the Cape Point Challenge) preferred the old Mako.

At the time of the first South African World Cup in 2004, most of the top paddlers were using Millenniums.  The Custom Kayaks Icon had just come onto the scene but the established market leader was Fenn.

My experience is in the US and only since about 1998.  The millenium was pretty dominant for a 2-3 yr period before the M6 and V10 due to its nice combination of predictable feel/stability from the deep seat and good speed.  It was a handful in rough water for many, so lots of paddlers switched to the more stable Huki S1X when it came out.  A few Mark 1's and Icons were around, but didn't get as popular.  Before these skis (1998-2002?) I think the US market was pretty much using a little bit of everything.  Top racers were still buying light weight spec skis.  There were a few on the Current Designs Speedster.  Findeisen had two nice skis, the X and UX.  Futura had the Blade, Carrera, the C4, Valhalla's Victory was popular too.  Twogood had some old Mako's around.  I think during this time and earlier, most coastal paddlers were on spec skis because that is what they saw and they worked well in the ocean.  Those on protected waters were on one of the other designs - many of which had kick-up rudders and weren't really optimal for rough ocean racing.
