Surf ski shipping

Hi everyone,
I need some advice on how best to ship a surf ski from Cape Town to Europe. First of all does anyone know of a good shipping company. Time is not a problem so I'll take the cheapest option available, I guess this rules out airline cargo.
What is the best way to package a boat? And does anyone know the weight and dimensions after packaging? I've seen mention of sonotubes, are there any distributors of sonotubes in Cape Town that anyone knows of?
From what I've heard to date it is the volume that one pays for, about $150 per m^3.
Cheers.

barch, can't help on your specific route, but I had a Huki ski shipped from California to Trinidad, West Indies. Cost was US$900 with insurance and had it packed in bubblewrap and in a sonotube (extra $200). The biggest issue with transport (cheapest by Sea) is potential to get damaged. Spend money on packaging and insurance, it will pay off if the inevitable happens. Despite best efforts the tube that mine came in was damaged at the entry port (forklift driver hit the tube), but very minor damage to the ski.
Others here have had them shipped in mixed containers with some serious damage. Only when we reverted to a dedicated container (well almost) did a full shipment arrive intact from SA.
Best of luck

Hi Trinpad,
I hadn't really considered the 'damage factor' to be as significant as you suggest. Thanks advice! I might just convince my old man to crate it for me. From what I hear the cost is usually on volume for a ski, so the weight increase might not increase the cost all that much. Might be worth it.
Cheers,

How adventurous are you? How about paddling it there?

We struggle to get ski’s to the Cayman Islands and looked at all the avb. options. The cheapest by far is to fill a container with skis and then ship it over. Unfortunately we do not have enough people to do this and have made peace with the fact that we will have to pay much more than the cost of a ski in SA. We now buy our ski’s from Bruce in Florida, he imports the ski’s from SA and then ship it from Miami to us. You don’t say were you are in Europe but it might not be more expensive to buy a ski from a dealer or second hand, than shipping it from SA. The only problem is where to find the dealers (take me to your dealer) and maybe one of the manufactures can help. Eddie

Hi all,
Thanks for the advice. My location is Copehagen, Denmark. I've looked around for some boats here. But the local dealer has sold all his stock to another dealer in Sweden as far as I can tell. The price they want is more than what my car is worth...and cars are expensive as it is in Denmark. I miss Cape Town right now!
What are the dimensions and weight of a typical ski when packed up/crated?
My guess is 0.35 x 0.35 x 7m; 30-40kg? How far off am I?
Cheers,
Simon

i packed up an outrigger (home built crate) dimensions finished up more like .60 x .55 x 7.5m (a little bigger than a ski).
Weight depends what you make the crate from - i got a little carried away with bracing, and used decking timber (it was cheapest), came in at 140kg (about 20 of which is canoe!).
Hopefully it was worth it - it arrives next week!

Hi Simon,
Not sure what ski you are after, but most manufacturers have established distribution outlets in Europe. In the likes of Denmark, you are close to some of the Think outlets which have been set up over the past few months.
I'm sure if you chase it up with your preferred manufacturer they should be able to help you. Would probably work out a lot cheaper to sell your ski in Cape Town and buy locally in Europe.
And bring a cag, can get nippy in that part of the world!
Cheers.

There are distributors for Fenn, Epic and Think in Germany. Might be an option to do a weekend trip an get one from them.
Cheers
