Anyone out there that would like to share what it cost them to do Molokai? Airfare, accomodations, pilot boat, rental car etc. There must be some good stories of doing it on the cheap!

Nothing cheap about doing the Molokai!!

Here is my take on it. This is my first year and so far is costing as follows:

Airfare (from Aus) $1600
Accomm $1500
Ski Hire $300
Ski Transport $400
Support Boat $815
Race Entry $191
Airfare from Oahu to Moloaki $90

Total Approx $5000 and i havent had anything to eat, catch a taxi, or a beer after the race. $6000 when all said and done.

Started paddling about 4 years ago, always with the Molokai as a goal. Paddling seriously for 2 years, did a bit of surf swimming before.
Raced in Durban last year but didnt handle the big stuff very well, the SA guys there tell me it was the biggest swell and strongest wind they have ever raced in. I was flipped 180 degrees about 5 times and cracked the hull on my ski landing at the bottom of waves instead of using the swell and going across, a good and steep learning curve i can still recall screaming out in joy as i was hurling down the faces, my garmin said my best speed was 31km/h!
I have been paddling from La Perouse to Rose Bay as often as we have had southerleys blowing here in Sydney, otherwise just going out off Bondi and around close to the cliffs working the boucebacks etc.
I am paddling a Think Legend, love it.
I use a Epic split shaft paddle sold here by Bennett.
I did a fairly solid winter in the kayak, then raced SLS short course stuff for the first time in March. Since then just long paddles mixed up with some interval stuff about 4-5 times a week, my body cant really handle anymore than that, the long paddles really take it out of me.
I came 19th in the bridge to beach race here in Sydney in March, by far my best result. I have been improving all the time and feel like i get better everytime i get on the ski, learning new stuff just from being out there.
I will be hoping to handle Molokai well and mainly just enjoy catching runner after runner (hopefully!!!). Then enjoy a few (thousand) beers with the other paddlers after the race and tell stories into the night....
