The Watchfulness of God

READY:  “And David said unto Michal, It was before Jehovah, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of Jehovah, over Israel: therefore will I play before Jehovah.” -2 Samuel 6:21 (ASV)

SET:  Most of the time when I was involved in sports, I had very few people rooting for me in the stands. Yet, when my family could come to watch me, I was very keenly aware of where they were at in the stands. I remember one particular high school track meet near Cincinnati. My parents were there watching, my brother and sisters were present, and many of my classmates were there, so I wanted to do my very best.

In the Old Testament, we read that King David was involved in bringing the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. As he was doing so, he became caught up in the moment. Before they had taken more than a half dozen steps, David halted the procession to offer a sacrifice to God. He literally rejoiced at every step.

The Bible tells us that David leaped and “danced before the Lord.” He didn’t care who else was watching, just as long as the Lord was. His excitement was contagious. Others soon became caught up in the celebration, too. They shouted and blew on trumpets as they proceeded into Jerusalem. It must have been a grand parade.

When we play our particular sport, we must remember that even if no one else is watching, we too are playing before God. He sees our attitudes, our sportsmanship, our efforts, our failings and our successes. He watches us as a father would. When we give our best, play with Christian sportsmanship in mind, and give others a positive role model to watch, He is pleased. Keep that in mind as you compete today.

GO:
1. Are you playing for the crowd or for God?
2. How can you remind yourself when you step onto the field/court that your heavenly Father is watching?

1 Samuel 16:17
Matthew 3:17

Running on the Edge

READY:  “Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path.” -Proverbs 4:26

SET:  Driving down the road yesterday I saw something that made me take notice. Coming toward me was a middle-aged man running against traffic. Now, that did not bother me so much; I see that all the time. But what I found strange was that he had his iPod on and was running right on the edge of the cars. Then I broke out in laughter because not 10 feet from him on his left was a beautiful well-groomed sidewalk, on which there was not a single person.

After I stopped laughing, God spoke to me. “What’s so funny,” I felt Him asking. “You do that all the time.” I respectfully replied, “I do not. I don’t even run anymore.” OK, it’s probably not a great idea to get sarcastic with the Creator of the world. I knew where He was going. He reminded me of the sin in my life and how many times I run/walk/live on the edge of sin when He (the Creator of the perfect path) has given me a clear and safe sidewalk.

Why is it that we, like this iPoded man, run in harm’s way on the edge of sin? Maybe we think we can stay on the edge and never go over it. But the creator of all sin does not play fair, and he will do anything he can to bring us to the brink of destruction. Proverbs 4:26 tell us to mark out a straight path for our feet and stay on the safe path—the path God intends for us.

What is running on the edge to you? Maybe it is the party everyone goes to after the game, being alone with your boyfriend/girlfriend, or staying up late and watching something on TV. I don’t know what the edge is for you, but you do! Running on the sidewalk of life may not be appealing, but it is the safest place to be. God provides us with a safe path. Our job is to run/walk/live in it.

GO:
1. When was the last time you were running on the edge in life?
2. What are those areas in your life that tend to drag you to the edge?
3. Daily, how can you run/walk/live on the safe path with Christ?

WORKOUT:
Psalms 1:6
Proverbs 4:27
1 Corinthians 10:13

At present, each participating crew will be allocated one canoe for their registered race division. The paddler representing your club in the OC1 race will be advised of their canoe allocation during registration on Friday.

This is our fifth event and the first day of racing has seen some challenging conditions every year so far, so be prepared for a course change as your safety is our main concern. This race is for experienced OC1 paddlers and this is not the time to “give it a bash” especially when the owners of the OC1’s have given their precious canoe to you in good faith that you will look after it as if it were your own. Each paddler will sign an indemnity form stating that they are responsible for any repairs or for the replacement of the OC1 if need be. If a canoe has been damaged or needs to be replaced, the paddler responsible AND the club they paddle for will not be eligible to race until the funds due have been recovered.

Last year saw NZ paddler Bernie Murch from Waitakere take out the Open Women’s title ahead of the winner from 2006, local paddler Serena Hunter. The open men’s race was won by first time Vaka Eiva participant, Manny Kulukulukulani of Team Livestrong Hawaii who finished just under one minute ahead of local paddler Reuben Dearlove of Te Tupu o te Manava.

Trader Jacks will be providing a BBQ meal to all paddlers which will be followed by the Official Opening Ceremony. Paddlers will be treated to a Local Cultural Show. Then the top place getters for today will be presented with their medals and trophies.
