We can confirm that surf ski paddlers are welcome to participate in the 2007 Round Madeira Race. We were concerned that this might not be the case - the event website says that only sea kayaks are allowed. However, Rui Drummond of the organizing committee has explicitly confirmed that surf skis will be eligible to race.

A century ago, the fisherman out of Gloucester, Massachusetts were among the toughest watermen on the earth. Long before Gloucester was immortalized in the best-selling book and then movie The Perfect Storm, it was the leading fishing port in the world. Heading north and east from Gloucester into the stormy stretch of the Atlantic from Cape Cod to Newfoundland, sailors would leave their mother ship in two-man dories to set lines for cod and halibut.

[Editor: The 2007 North Sea Outrigger Canoe and
Surfski championships took place on the weekend of 14th/15th
July at Surfer's Paradise, Knokke, Belgium. The event was a huge success and is
testament to the growth of surf ski in Europe - although the race started as an
OC event, they're expecting surf skis to outnumber OCs in 2008.
Event Organizer Danny D'Hooge sent us this
report.]

He went on: "At the end of August the
French kayak federation hold a series of races on open ocean and it is
generally extremely well run, and always very enjoyable."
