The Caribbean island of Guadeloupe had had a week of superb paddling conditions - great wind, great waves.  The day of the Defis Kayak race dawned however to... zero wind and zero waves.  "It was like paddling in an oven," said Franck Fifils.

Three hours into the Chicago Shoreline Marathon, a 38km race on Lake Michigan, Dawid Mocke, Bevan Manson, and Steve Woods, three South Africans vying for the $3,000 first prize, could see the finish up ahead. Second place paid $1,500; third half that.

There's a great lineup for the second Chicago Shoreline Marathon this weekend - South Africans Dawid & Nikki Mocke and Steve Woods have continued their tour from San Francisco; last year's winner Erik Borgnes will be there as will our favorite adventure writer, New Yorker Joe Glickman.
