The top paddlers have to be feeling some
nerves tonight as they prepare for tomorrow's 28km ARB Surf Ski World Cup -
they'll be racing for the largest purse in paddling history - R80,000 (around
US$11,500)...
And the weather looks perfect for a
cracking downwind race.

 Official Results and a transcript of the coverage of the ARB Surfski World Cup. We were in cellphone contact with the race referee John Parton and his crew who relayed events to us as they unfolded from the race support boats.
There was massive drama in the form of a container ship that crossed the path of the leading bunch and plunged the race into controversy.

Sunday to take advantage of a major frontal system that is expected to
sweep up the coast, providing exciting downwind racing for the massive

Were the ARB Surf Ski World Cup to be held in calm, flat conditions, this writer would think twice before putting money down on anyone but Australia's ace paddler, Tim Jacobs. But the weather forecast is firming up as race day approaches and it seems likely that the organizers will run the main event on Sunday in classic Durban downwind conditions. So how does that affect the predictions?

Tim Jacobs beat Hank McGregor by almost a minute in today's 20km
KZN Awnings Toti race. All the top rated
South African paddlers took part, save for Dawid Mocke who is still training in
Cape Town.
And newly arrived New Zealand ace Katie Pocock cleaned up
the women's field, winning easily ahead of South African Belinda Carbutt .
