There's an excellent guide to the Cape Point Challenge route available on www.surfski.co.za including times, distances, estimated elapsed time and things to watch out for.  There's a course map up there as well. Go take a look.

How to use this information 

If you have a Forerunner 301 you can set the waypoints and route on the unit.  If you follow the route it will show you the direction to follow and will tell you the distance remaining to the next waypoint.

This is very reassuring especially if you haven't done the route before.

Equally effective however, is simply to memorise the distances to the main waypoints (or write them down on your ski with a waterproof pen) and set the GPS to show elapsed distance.  You can then display other useful information like elapsed time and speed.
