Race Announcement: 2006 Peninsula Surfski Marathon

 

The Peninsula Surfski Marathon 2006 takes place in Cape Town on 25th and 26th February...

 

Organiser Richard Kohler says, "This race is not for the faint hearted, we've got between 40 and 60km of downwind racing, depending on the conditions...  It's a an awesome weekend of paddling!"

 

This is a doubles race although, "..there'll be plenty of singles on the water..."

 

The race is in its third year and is set to become one of the Cape's classic races. Designed to be primarily downwind, the course is set for the condtions of each day. 

 

 

Dates:

 

Registration: Friday 24th February 2006 at Oceana Power Boat Club (Granger Bay) from 16h30 till 18h30.
Race Days: Saturday 25th February 2006 and Sunday 26th February 2006.
Day 1 race will not start before 9am.

 

Venue:

 

Cape Town, Western Cape.

 

Courses:


Option 1: Buffels Bay to Fishoek
Option 2: Platboom to Kommetjie
Option 3: Hout Bay to Granger Bay
Option 4: Milnerton to Melkboss
Option 5: Monwabisi to Gordons Bay
Option 6: Big Bay around Robben Isand.


These and other options may be used and or modified. ± 55km for both days.

 

Course Conditions:


The weather conditions are typically 20km/h South-West winds, though South-Easter winds up to 40km/h and North-Westerly winds up to 40km/h may prevail over these periods. The water temperatures are typically around 14 deg C. The course has many beaches as well as long stretches of inhospitable rocks. It is intended to be a predominantly Downwind race. Therefore the direction of the course, and the course itself may be adapted to achieve a total of 40 to 60km of downwind racing. The exact course and start times will be advertised via sms about 2 hours before on race day.

 

Classes:


This is a Double and Singles ski race with the focus on Doubles for the following categories:


Open Men Ski-2, Ski-1; Women Ski-2, Ski-1; Mixed-Double Ski-2; Veteran Men Ski-2 , Ski-1(40-49); Masters Men Ski-2(50+).


The first/last year in which a competitor can compete in a particular age group is the calendar year in which his/her birthday falls. Junior + senior = senior, all rest to youngest category.

Entry fees:


R180/paddle; R230/paddle for late entries; R130 for juniors
R40 temp CSA membership if not a member.

 

Closing date:


Sunday 19th February 2006 @ 24h00

 

Rules:


The ICF Marathon Rules with CSA Surf Ski Amendments apply.
Boats must display CSA race number.
