Conditions were good on Saturday, with a light S/SE and a challenging 3-4 ft swell pushing on the med tide on the sand bar. Some of the paddlers got cleaned up on returning into the Creek, yours truly included, but in mitigation it was quite congested what with all the surfers out and even a surf boat or two to contend with, so choosing the best line around the breakwater wasn’t that easy to get spot-on. (Yeah, yeah, yeah…no more excuses I hear you say). Adam Morley again thrashed the field, in a new course record of 45.11, with Leo returning after a bout of flu taking the OC1 in a time of 51.14.

Basically it should work out that even Saturdays are 2 weeks apart, but its just one of those things that happen. To prevent this from happening again, in future I will be looking at setting out the race dates well in advance, so everyone is clear about the race dates. So have a look in the red box below for the remaining race dates. Nonetheless, we again increased our numbers over last weekend, with 16 starters on the line, with 6 new entrants, but no doubles and no ladies yet. We look forward to the day we have our first lady paddlers, which I have on good authority will be soon. Newcomers to watch in the coming weeks are Paul Andersen, with a creditable time of 51.35 and Shane Sterry who I am told is a multi sport racer of note, and whose time improved a whopping 6 minutes over last weeks time. Another newcomer Kim Pollock improved his PB by almost 2 mins. Excellent when one considers he fell out twice in his very first time trial less than a month ago. On the return leg back to the Creek, whilst tapping along, catching a breather after being dropped by Matt Carter on his OC1, Mike Morgan and I were chatting, and we agreed on how great it was to be out on the water on a Saturday morning, paddling with your mates, with the sun on your back, a light breeze into your face to cool your over heated body down, a challenging little surf section approaching, you’re chasing the guy in front of you, or trying to stay ahead of the baying pack behind you, your heartbeat is maxing out, and you get to consider this one thing……Is there any better place you would rather be on such a beaut day? No ways!! NEWS BRIEFS: World Surf Lifesaving Championships begin this weekend from 10th –26th Feb in Lorne Geelong Victoria. Lifesavers from around the world will be competing for their respective clubs and countries on the beach and poolside at various disciplines including board, ski, swim, ironman, surf boats and beach sprint. Good luck to all those athletes competing! Please if you are having problems receiving this newsletter, or are unable to send me an e-mail, please give me a ring on 0418 158 765, and I will do my best to rectify the problem. THE SUGGESTIONS BOX: Q: Can’t we have a time trial like the Currumbin Creek one but nearer to Brisbane, as it’s a long way for me to drive every weekend. Ans: Momentum is gathering for such a time trial, possibly at Raby Bay in Cleveland, so if there are interested paddlers from farther afield than the Gold Coast, please contact me at the e mail address below on 0418 158 765. The more interest, the sooner we can get it off the ground. Q: Can I bring along my mates to paddle in the time trial, even though they are not lifesavers or canoeists. Ans: Absolutely! As long as they have a ski and paddle. And if they don’t have one, then get them to give me a phone call, and I’ll give them a good price on a new ski and paddle.
