What a week it was! But we did have the paddle – run on Thursday in Hout Bay, once again in testing conditions. Got to say thanks to all those for there advice on Tuesday as we all tried hard to put the event on. All the options where considered, but the weather gods got us. I spoke to Port control and they were recording 60 to 70 knots in Table Bay. With that kind of wind, Oceana wasn’t able to hide from the wind. Lets hope that this wind give us a break for a bit. Whats happening....

Bit of a routine change for everyone, not use to having an event on Thursday. With a few keen paddlers and runners rocking up, wondering if the race would be on or not as the wind did it usual thing. The original paddle course was out to Buchanan Boyes buoy (that's chappies) and back. But the wind changed to more south west on the beach, so the course change to the Sentinel Rock and back twice, with the run shorten to 6km up chappies and back. The wind made up for the other 2km. Ian Trautmann took the lead as the gun went off from the start, with everyone sitting on his trail for the first lap. The second lap was a little more testing as the wind swung and increased to a more eastly direction. One or two paddlers call a time out for a drink in the pub. But the Ian had to work hard to keep Andrew McPherson and Neil Bailey a bay, so he could give his team mate Peter Kirk the best advantage going into the run. While Andrew was trying to get a good lead over speedster Steve Farrell as he holds the fast run time from the last paddle - run. Ian hit the beach first to release Peter who was off like a bullet across the beach. Andrew was second, with Neil 3 seconds later to release his team mate Eric. Who quickly took over second spot as Andrew had a put on his running shoes? Now the chase was on to get back his second spot. Could he do it? Speedster Steve still couldn't be written off yet as he came off the paddle in 7th. A quick change into his shoes and he was off, burning up the sand across the beach. Peter Kirk managed to hold onto the lead to take like owners, but not too far behind there was some impressive running by Steve Farrell as he came from 7th to take second overall and posted the fastest running time. Third was the team of Neil Bailey and Eric. Andrew McPherson tried had, but wasn't able to catch him and had to settle for 4th. Miles Rasmussen who was 5th, also had an impressive run (3 fastest time) as he came off the paddle in 9th position. Nina Hind stuck it out to the end to be the first women and also managed to crack a top 10 for the run leg. Well done to all those that gave it a bash. Big thanks to New Balance for sponsoring all those great prizes. To the team that made the event happen. Thank you! To Shirley and Di for registration and timing.
