King of the Harbour Update

Marty Helleur has managed to secure Air Tahiti Nui as a major sponsor of the 2006 King of the Harbour. North Shore City Council is also on board with various levels of sponsorship. It is exciting to have them on board, and will assist immensely us in putting on the first ever combined Surfski and V1 Outrigger World Cup. Top paddlers from South Africa, Australia and Tahiti have already registered their intention to come and race, with many continuing onto Tahiti the following weekend for the second World cup of 2006.

The 2006 King of the Harbour website is now up and running, though not quite complete. Please check out the details on www.surfski.co.nz by hitting the King of the Harbour link. You will note that the Day 2 25km course has change slightly from what was previously advertised. The race will now either start or finish at either Takapuna Beach or Gulf Harbour. The final course will be determined by the wind, with large yellow marks being used tom optimise the downwind surfing over a 25km distance. It should make things simpler on the day, and keeps us out of shipping lanes most of the time and gets us out into more open water – we will effectively be racing over the same patch of ocean as the America’s Cup.

2006 World Cups

Canoe racing NZ is looking to send six person teams to the following world Cups in 2006: Tahiti April 14 and 16; Durban July 1 and 2; Perth November. They will consist of three open men, one open woman, one under-20 male and one over-40 male. A funding application is under way to raise some assistance with airfares. The selection criteria will be the same as for 2005: your results in King of the Harbour and NZ Long Distance Surfski Champs, and your results in other international races are used to assist selection.
