Cape Town -Great White sharks appear to be flocking to Plettenberg Bay along with the Easter holidaymakers, according to the National Sea Rescue Institute.

Station commander Ray Farnham said on Thursday the bay was experiencing "a visible presence of Great White sharks in what we believe may be greater-than-normal numbers".

It was suspected their presence was related to the tail-end of the sardine run, and that they would remain in the area until early May.

"The sharks, ranging in length from about 3.5m to about 7m, are visibly patrolling along our stretch of coast," he said. "We are appealing to members of the public to be cautious.

"Avoid swimming in river mouths or where rip currents are strongest (particularly now with the Spring tide) as these are most likely to be the areas where the sharks will be feeding on fish."

Members of the public can phone 082 990 5975 to report any sightings.

Hammerheads
written by mckrouk, January 16, 2007
On a paddle from central beach to Robberg in Plett 2 years ago in June, I counted 35 small hammerheads, all less than 1 metre in size. Didn't see mommy though...
