ImageSurfski.info is proud to announce the launch of the Garmin Millers Run Challenge…

Avnic Trading cc, South African distributors for Garmin, have entered into a sponsorship agreement that will see them provide prizes in the form of Garmin GPS units for a unique Surfski event: the Garmin Millers Run Challenge.

The way it works is this: anyone wishing to challenge the record for the downwind run between Bakoven Rock (off Millers Point) and Fish Hoek here in Cape Town will be required to record the run on a Garmin Forerunner GPS and to submit the unit for verification by the competition judges, Alain Jaques and Rob Mousley of Surfski.info.

The competition will run from now until the end of the next summer season, with a prize award being made towards the end of February 2007. Surfski.info will run the competition and will post the results of record attempts on a “ladder” on the website.

Ladders for various categories of paddler (Men, Women, Veterans, Masters, Juniors) will be run. Apart from the grand prize of a Garmin Forerunner 305, prizes will be allocated to the winners in the other categories either from Garmin or other sub-sponsors.

"After we prove the concept with the Millers Run," said Rob Mousley of Surfski.info, "we want to export the challenge to other locations - Durban, PE & East London for example.  And there's no reason why we can't do overseas in places like Hawaii or anywhere that has a classic downwind route."

Over the next few days, more details will be published on Surfski.info – stay tuned!

How can we enter if we do not own a Garmin? Is there any discounts/incentives available if we should want to purchase a Garmin?

Garmin Loan Units

If you ask very nicely, and perhaps offer something in exchange like a demo Mako 6 :grin , we do have a couple of units that people can borrow to record a run (when we're not doing the run ourselves of course!).

Rob, you state "will be required to record the run on a Garmin Forerunner GPS" does this mean my Etrex and Garmin V don't qualify?

As long as we can see the data, can confirm that you covered the distance and the time taken is measured, we'll accomodate other GPS units - but they do need to be Garmin units.
