The 2006 U.S. Surfski Championships is starting to take form and this year we will be holding the event at an exciting new location, Crissy Field in San Francisco. Crissy Field is located just inside the Golden Gate Bridge on the South side. This location will offer spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island, a large sandy beach for launching surfskis and much better viewing opportunities for spectators.
This year there is a minimum $10,000.00 in prize money generously donated by Ocean Paddle Sports, Huki Outriggers & Surfskis, Epic Kayaks and Wave Chaser Paddle series. The cash will be paid out to the top 10 men’s long course finishers, top 5 women’s long course finishers and top 5 doubles teams in the long course. Maui Jim sunglasses will again be supplying sunglasses for all division winners. Paddle me sportswear will be donating the race jerseys.
Dawid Mocke has confirmed that he will be returning this year to defend his title and hopefully will bring along a few of his countrymen with him. Greg Barton will also be returning to give Dawid another run for his money and try to regain his title. Other top returning racers are Mark Sandvold, Steve Kelly from Hawaii, Zsolt Szadovsky, Rami Zur, and Patrick & DeAnne Hemmens from California, Robert Clegg, North Carolina. These top surfski paddlers along with other surfski paddlers from Hawaii, California, British Columbia, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Florida will ensure the competition is better than ever.
