ImageSurfski paddlers will be challenging the runners again on Heritage Day, 25th September 2006, in Hout Bay.

Paddlers will set off on an 8km course while runners will do approximately 10 km up Chapman's Peak and then back to the harbour.  Both paddlers and runners will cross the same finish line on the beach.

Where do the cannons fit into the proceedings?

Big Bang

In what has become a tradition, the Hout Bay artillerymen fire a round from East Fort using their Finspang 18 pounder for the first paddler or runner to reach the turning mark at Chapman's Peak.

Secret Strategy Should See Paddlers Win

Every year so far, the paddlers have been first to the turning point, but the runners have come through to beat the paddlers to the finish.

Following a top secret strategy meeting this year Johan van Blerk, organiser of the ski race, will be manipulating the course in an effort to get a paddler across the finish line first.  (This information should be memorised, then forgotten and never discussed, especially with bipedal competitors.)

Entry Fee Supports The NSRI

ImageThe entry fee of just R25 per paddle will be handed to NSRI on the day so don't expect prizes, it's about Heritage and the guardians of our coast!

Rolling Thunder

But this year, there's more............at around 14h00 and not before, there will be a unique "Rolling Salvo" fired from the East Fort Battery. If you've never seen or heard one it's not to be missed so why not bring the family and a picnic lunch!

Paddlers to get one over the Runners
written by sports4u, September 05, 2006
Last year the runners won. It time for the paddlers to get one over them.

Raised R1300 for NSRI. Hopefully will be able to better this.
