1) The 2006 / 07 Hout Bay Tuesday Series kicks off this Friday evening with registration at the Hout Bay Yacht Club starting at 17h30 through to 19h30. Galley open for meals.

R280 Full season registration includes all series races.
R 80 Registration only, race fee R20 per race R20 Junior paddler registration. Races are free for juniors however no  race prizes will be allocated unless sponsor supplied.

Race 1 of the 18 race series starts at 18h00 on October the 10th. As the days get longer the race start times will progress toward 18h15.  There will be no Paddle Run races this season.

N/B PFD,s are compulsory for all events and leashes for windy races. Keep your leash and PFD in your wet bucket. Standing on the beach worrying about your safety is the only unpleasant part of running this rewarding series.

Races will be cancelled if conditions deteriorate and SMS notices will be sent as early as possible. Please ensure your latest cell number is written on your series registration form.

Series tops will be given to the first 100 paddlers registered, however  this is subject to series sponsorship levels yet to be finalised! Tops should then be ready by race 5.

Ok that’s the formal bit done, rivers are behind us and it’s time for some open water upwind slogs followed by clever use of runs to sort out your mates. There’s a big group of dedicated ski paddlers that have kept at it through winter, just so they can thrash the river paddlers when they venture out onto the bay with surfski’s recovered from dark corners of the garden!

2) The 2006 Cannon race started with a minutes silence for Lindsay Weight, last years ladies winner and sports science doctor with a special place in the hearts of sports lovers and runners alike.

The Cape Field Artillery got off an impressive bang from their field gun to start the race just as a set came through and it was Sean Butler and two or three others that got through unscathed with exceptionally fast starts. The rest of the entries were wiped out time and again with multiple wet starts! The ‘Boetie op Manouvers’ award has to go to Tracy Smith as she got taken out time and time again, remounting her ski and finally crossing the backline around ten minutes after the start gun! The ‘I should have stayed in bed award’ goes to Keith Enslin as his ski was broken in two on it’s way back to the beach by a ski on it’s way out!

Don't follow this man...
Ski’s were in with a fighting chance against the runners until……….a certain paddler with the initials B.H. that has a girlfriend T.S. and drives a bakkie with Surfski Series MHD branding, led the faster paddlers on an extra lap of the race leaving Trevor Stander the job of beating the runners singlehandedly,  which he failed to do with a dismal paddling display brought on by a chronic dose of Mc Donald Happy Meals, lack of fitness, late nite burping, colic and ‘Happy Hugger’ changes! Tracy Smith won the Ladies from Heidi Koch who also followed Bxxxx Hxxxxx on an extra lap. Trevor and Tracy won the honour of firing two of the east fort cannons in the planned rolling salvo. Unfortunately the heavy rains of the day meant that the rolling salvo has been delayed for another day. Oh yes the runners won for the third year in a row!

3) Registration evening will be an opportunity to donate just R20 per person to the NSRI. I’m a bit skaam to hand over just R560 collected at the Cannon Race so here’s the deal. Cannon Race paddlers are not expected to contribute but a donation from anyone that never had the time or opportunity to enter the Cannon Race is welcome to drop just R20 into a collection box that will be provided. I will attend the launch of the new Hout Bay NSRI rescue craft at the end of the month where I will hand over the collection on behalf of Surfski Paddlers.

4) Don’t forget the Cape Can beat the Sharks ski record! Billy says:  BIG IDEA – YOU CAN participate in the World Record race without registering for the Series. Race entry will be R50. Normally we charge R90 for a once off race on Sunday 15 October at the Oceana Powerboat Club

See you on the water.

Cheers

Johan

Surfski Safety Recommendations
Seafaring is more enjoyable with knowledge. Following these guidelines does not guarantee your safety on the ocean, but will help.
THE GOLDEN RULE: NEVER LEAVE YOUR CRAFT. It is your most reliable form of buoyancy and will indicate where you are to rescue craft.
