The wind was woes for the Paddle Run and some just did a ‘u’ turn in the car park and went home but the real manne and two lady paddlers lined up for the paddle leg which took in two laps of the harbour via Preen and a pole on the beach. Off the beach Michael Martin led the way but slowly fell back as the two Marks led back to the beach from Steve Farrell, Sean Butler, Rob Hart, Mike Martin and Langebaan spy Rob Meintjies. Rebecca Newson was just two seconds behind the Spy and was first lady in from the paddle leg. Rebecca handed over for the run to team mate Siutje Suigerhoff visiting from Germany while the two Marks had already plodded off down the beach pursued by Steve Farrell and Sean’s runner, Peter Kirk last years winner, when he teamed up with Daniel Kantor. Out of nowhere the two Marks were back on the start line and declared they were skipping the run and were off to chat to Megan Kelley who was just finishing the swim leg of her triathlon, Megan completed her swim and paddled off to finish the paddle leg before the Marks got close. Frozen and tired Megan left on the run leg two minutes behind the runner ahead of her but managed to close the deficit down to one minute by the end of the 5 km beach run which included two laps of the beach with a loop around the Disa River bird hide in the dunes. Peter Kirk and Steve Farrell shared the fastest run time of 24:57 and Graham Rowe 3rd fastest run time just edging out Rob Hart by a few seconds. Megan Kelly was fastest lady on the run and 7th runner overall! Steve Farrell won the race overall as an individual from the Butler-Kirk men’s team and Rob Hart was in as second individual and an excellent third overall. Mike Martin was 3rd individual finisher. Rebecca and Siutje were the first ladies team in 10th place overall and a gutsy run from Megan won her the ladies individual race. Sean Butler and Graeme Rowe won the AbseilAfrica Table Mountain abseils sponsored by Adventureworks at prize giving and the evening ended with some laughs watching Keith’s excellent videos……you had to be there! Results are up on www.sports4u.co.za Thanks to Shirley for reg, Keith for video’s, Sipho for four wheel contraption surveillance and carrying projectiles from the beach to the carpark, Chris and crew on Faraway and race assistance from Nicole and Peter of the Harfield Harriers!
