ImageThe 2007 Molokai World Championship event has been announced - a new sponsor (Epic Kayaks), a new organization, $25,000 in prizes and a slightly modified course all add up to what looks like a cracker of a race.

Winning the Molokai race is considered the holy grail of surf ski - only six men have won it in its entire 25 year history.  Oscar Chalupsky was close to his twelfth victory when first time entrant Clint Pretorius (also of South Africa) overtook him close to the finish.  Both are expected back to duel it out again this year.

The course has been changed to finish at Waikiki's Queen's Beach, increasing the course slightly to 34.5 nautical miles.  One of the benefits of this is that the final section is no longer into the prevailing wind.

The race takes place on 20 May 2007, a month before the ARB Surf Ski World Cup in Durban, South Africa.

"What we are seeing in the birth of a new and exciting international sport," said Oscar Chalupsky, "just like the surfing world champs except everybody participates. Even if you are not the best in the world you can line up next to Hank McGregor, Dean Gardiner."
