Image The New Zealand King of the Harbour race takes place in Auckland on 24th/25th of March 2007.

South Africans Bevan Manson, Oscar Chalupsky (current Australia World Cup Champion) and Dawid Mocke (King of the Harbour winner in 2004 and 2005) will be flying to Auckland to take on the best that the rest of the world have to offer.

Oscar Chalupsky

Oscar astonished the world by winning the Australian World Cup in 2006 in relatively flat conditions.  The old man (he turns 44 today) used to be known as a downwind specialist.  "Downwind" it seems means anything from a 5m to a 5cm wave.  If there's a bump of any sort, Oscar's in with a chance.

Dawid Mocke

Dawid and Oscar went head to head in the 2006 Dubai Shamal race in December 2006 when Dawid narrowly beat a charging Oscar who made a phenomenal effort to make second place.

The rivalry between these two is legendary - Oscar says that the best paddlers in the world are from Durban; Dawid lives in Cape Town where, according to Oscar, there's no competition.  The previous time they met, in the 2005 Cape Point Challenge, Dawid beat Oscar by miles.

And what of the competition?

Ash Nesbit was the closest Australia had to competing with the South African team in Perth and Dubai last year.

Will Mike Walker make an impression on home turf?

Stay tuned, the race is a cracker and we'll have the results and reports on Surfski.info.
