Image[Editor: Paul Mauger sent us this announcement of a new series on the Aussie Gold Coast... Paul is a huge force for ocean racing, having started the Currumbin Creek series early in 2006 which has grown from strength to strength.  He's also one of a few paddlers who have had an up front and personal interaction with a Great White Shark while paddling but that's another story!]

The Gold Coast Desalination Alliance is proud and excited to be able to announce sponsorship of the Gold Coast Surf Ski Series for the 2007 calendar year.

The series format, titled as the GOLD COAST DESALINATION PROJECT WINTER SURF SKI SERIES 2007, takes the form of 3 downwind races, between 18 and 31 kms.

All the races will be held on the Gold Coast, and entries are invited from all experienced ocean surf ski paddlers and kayakers.

Top Aussie Paddlers

Many of Australia's top surfski marathon paddlers are expected to compete, including Dave Kissane, current Australian Marathon Champion, Dean Gardiner, Multiple World Molokai ski Champion, and Guy Andrews, Gold Coasts' favourite son, and Multi-sport Champion, as well as top ski paddlers from Queensland and NSW.

The series is the brainchild of Paul Mauger, an experienced ocean paddler and kayaker for more than 35 years, and has been 2 years in the making.

Ocean surfski racing is currently one of the fastest growing ocean sports in the world, and with the 2007 World Cup due to be held in South Africa in June this year, this trend is set to continue.

First Race

The first race of the series takes place in little more than a week, on Sunday 29th April, starting at 13h00 in the afternoon.

The purpose of a late start is so that the wind has an opportunity to blow and hopefully generate some wind swell.

The start is set to take place from the Jack Evans Boat Harbour on the Tweed River - Coolangatta, and then proceeds out to sea and round Cook Island and back to the finish at Currumbin Creek.

Should a change of course be required to meet the "downwind" format, all entrants will be warned timeously about any course changes.

Entries for the series first of three races are now open, and the first 50 paddlers who enter will receive on a first come first serve basis, paddling singlets and caps. Cash prizes are on offer to all category winners, and at the concluding series race in September, a single marathon surfski will be awarded to one lucky winner on a random draw.

Hopefully this series will be the start of bigger and better things for surfski ocean racing on the Gold Coast, Australia's most popular holiday destination.
