ImageDurban, South Africa - Entries for the ARB Surf Ski World Cup have started to pour into the event office ahead of the entry deadline at midnight on Wednesday.

The rapidly snowballing list of entries reflects paddlers from every corner of South Africa, and a big international contingent.

Entries have been lodged by paddlers from Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Tahiti, as well as the French Caribbean. France has entered a large team, thanks to the recent recognition by the International Canoe Federation as an ICF Sanctioned World Cup event.

Lewis Laughlan, the Tahitian paddler who won the Molokai title a fortnight ago has already submitted his entry. He was the highest placed international participant last year.

Around 350 paddlers are expected to take part in the event, making it the biggest World Cup event thus far, in addition to sporting the most prize money ever offered for a surf ski event.

"This event has stepped up a number of gears from the very successful ARB Surf Ski World Cup last year," said Butch Murray, the chairperson of the organizing committee. "The vision for this event is to entrench Durban as the surf ski capital of the world."

The overall winners prize of R80 000 is also the largest paddling prize on offer for any paddling event worldwide.

Late entries will be accepted, but a penalty will be levied for the late entry.

The ARB Surf Ski World Cup will take the form of a 25km to 30km single ski championship race, to be held on either Saturday 30 June or Sunday 1 July, to take advantage of the best weather conditions. Doubles entries are also welcome and category prizes will be awarded. There will also be over R 60 000 of attendance lucky draw give aways.
