ImageCape Town, South Africa. The Cape 2006/2007 summer season saw the inaugural “Garmin Millers Run Challenge” being run by surfski.info, with sponsorship from Avnec Trading, the South African agents for Garmin.

The rules are simple – to claim a record for the notorious Millers Run, all you have to do is send your GPS data for verification to Surfski.info.

Face-off - Oscar v Dawid

Although Dawid set the pace early in the season, a challenge was laid down in March by an in-form Oscar Chalupsky who raced Dawid in a one-on-one session in less than ideal conditions.

The story of this race is on the site (Millers Run Fun: Dawid and Goliath).

2006/2007 Winning Time

Dawid is this year's winner with a time of 39:31, set on March 7, 2007. Dawid won a Garmin Forerunner 305.

Oscar Chalupsky is the acknowledged overall champion with a time of 38:40, set in 2005.

Lucky Draw

A Garmin Forerunner 205 was also up for grabs. Anyone who had registered a time was in with a chance and Gary Kroukamp's name was first out of the hat.

In the coming season we hope to extend the range of prizes to veterans, ladies, juniors, etc.

2007/2008

Garmin have agreed to sponsor the competition in the coming season and Surfski.info is in negotiation to extend it to a route in Kwazulu Natal as well.

Our goal is to have a set of Garmin Downwind Challenges all over the world! Stay tuned.

The Garmin range of Forerunner GPS/HR monitors

The Garmin Forerunner units have proved extremely successful in South Africa with most of the top paddlers having adopted them as indispensible training tools.

Dawid Mocke agrees, having used the 305 both for training and for navigation during open races like the Molokai World Championships where (he came third).

"It's an essential piece of equipment," he said, "to the point where it's your ski, your paddle and your Garmin."

More information can be found on Garmin's website and you can read a review of the 305 from a paddler's perspective on www.surfski.info.
