ImageOlympic silver medalist and former ace surf ski paddler Nathan Baggaley was arrested on Monday evening, July 2, 2007, when he attempted to return a ski allegedly stolen earlier in the evening from Byron Bay Surf Life Saving Club.

Steroid Use

Baggaley is already in deep trouble with the Australian authorities .  He was banned for two years in 2005 after taking two banned steroids, stanozolol and methandienone.  (He claimed he'd sipped some juice belonging to his brother that contained the drugs.)

Caught with Ecstasy Tablets

In February this year the Gold Coast police stopped a car that allegedly contained both Baggaley and a large quantity of cash and ecstasy tablets.  A few days later, following a raid on his home, Baggaley  was charged with manufacturing ecstasy tablets after a pill press was found at his home.

Mr Baggaley
written by Joseph Pettigrew, July 09, 2007
G'Day,

He is Human as most of us are, mabe not all out there but most? show me some one out there who has not cut a corner or two in life and I will show you a lier something a bit below a thief? years gone by when young and dumb I was picked up doing a B&E and as luck had it picked up by a cop my father use to pay off so he took me to my Dad and this is what he said to my Dad, Joe he said the only differance in a good boy and a bad boy is the bad boy got caught keep an eye on Jr.

A far as juice in sport today who has not at least in the U.S were the big money is about pro sport, I know few in amateur sport who have not including my self at times in life? how about we start with a cup of Coffee & Creatine and work from there to my God is there s**t out there to take.

As far as who's wing are we using today some one please tell us mabe 20 ish years ago there were a few comeing from Europe Sweden being the Mom & Dad but today 99% came from someone's wing DA! and if you put ski's together and look at them very few of them could be classed as Virgin boats eather we all have a little prostitute in us when it comes to the $.

Work alone be very good at what you do or do not do it Words to live by.we hope Mr Baggaley will learn and come out a better mate after this, for life is for liveing & learning.

Cheers Joseph

Why oh why does he keep doing this to himself?

He could have been someone, actually was for a while (TV, national press etc). He even got better coverage for paddling in Australia due to his association and paticipation in the Mens Health series.

I know people who used to be mates with him and they cannot understand it. They have all said they want nothing to do with the guy now.

We all go off the tracks now and then but Nathan really appears to have given up on getting it back together.

It is a shame.

Breaking the silence
written by Nathan Baggaley (the real deal), July 16, 2007
I figure its about time i finally said something and put to rest some of the rubbish that is floating around out there. Yes its true, ive found myself in a whole lot of s**t lately and im not proud of it at all. Ive made some mistakes i can admit that. As its been pointed out before, i am only human and im man enough to admit ive made them and take responsibility for my actions. In regards to the drug charges i will first clear up that at no time ever, has a pill press been found at my house and I have not been charged with that. All i will say is dont believe half the rubbish you read. I will face court soon and i am confident everything will come to light and i will be cleared of all charges. All ive been charged with is being in a car which contained recreational drugs. The car wasnt mine and the bag they were found in wasnt mine. I wont dwell on this topic as its for the court to deceide and i will accept what comes my way. However what i wont cop,is the latest rubbish thats going on. I have been a member of byron surf club since 5 and have done alot for that club. i am disappointed that some members up there cant see that and have chosen to take their personal issues out on me through use of the police. Not only is this gutless, but its also a waste of precious police and court time....and as you can imagine, its really the last thing i need right now. The fact is i am designing a new ski and am gathering data and measurements from many different skis. I have CAD software which will be used to design the new ski from the data i gather and my own knowledge like my previous design. what actually happened was i entered through the main club doors the same way i have my entire life and took my kayak coaches ski home to get some measurements. I parked at the front of the club in my own car and made no attempt to hide anything. i got the necessary measurements and then returned the ski in its original condition less than 1hr later. If i was going to flop this ski like some have suggested, i would of needed it for days atleast. The fact is it was returned in under an hour. I was shocked to be arrested later for theft of this ski. when the police questioned me, they were shocked to discover that there wasnt even anything missing. Its that simple and its pretty sad that some people would resort to this. I have helped many members of that club with not only coaching and programs but i have also organised members to receive significant discounts on my model of ski and jump the que to get there skis quicker as recently as last season. Im sure when the new ski comes out that they will want to order one despite the fact that they have tried to get me arrested along the way. wake up byron surf club. how about help a man up when he is down rather than kick him. in regards to some of the other suggestions, yes i have been seeking counciling and yes i am trying to get my life back on track. its not easy with these set backs but it will take more than this to break me. I did lose sight of the path for a while and i did go off the rails. I accept that and i do apologise for my actions. I hope you can judge me by the way i work through my problems and bounce back. its not easy to admit you have problems and have made mistakes when the whole world is watching and judging, but i am determined to get through this and show that your past doesnt have to determine your future. i will stand up and take responsibility for my actions and will take whatever punishment is dealt if there is any. Just know that i will be back to paddle another day! I wont be commenting or writing again until after my court dates so please dont bother asking any questions as ive said all i have to say. All the best to all the paddlers out there.......and stay out of trouble. its not worth it! trust me

Put the last two years behind you and move on. You're a good bloke and a champion. You don't need the people who don't stick by you. They were never true friends in the first place.

Get back into working hard at what you're good at and draw upon the experiences that got you to the top of your game before. I can't wait to see you mixing it up on the water again. I feel confident that you will turn things around and opportunities will come your way again.

Hey Baggs,
As youngh paddler its really hard to understand and no whats fact or fiction i will admit ive had my doubts about you but like you said most of things you hear are only rumours and loose facts so you have to listen to the people who make the decisions on whats fact and whats fiction ie the police. The fact is you are not a steroid user you have been cleared of ever willingly taking a steroid and the doubters just have to deal with the fact your not a drug cheat. As for the latest charges i look forward to ur court date and do hope the facts come out and we develop an understanding of what happened. I was stoked to hear that you are tryin to get it together and good on ya for comin on and havin ya say it took guts. good luck baggs
And if ash backs thats good enough for me so i hope to see ya on the course or ocean soon.

Religion
written by karl treacher, July 18, 2007
Well, I do know Bags from Adam and also a bar of soap...(and no mate, if its on the shower floor, that's where it is staying smilies/wink.gif. 4 years ago i had never seen a ski, paddle, runs etc and the word Molokai meant a flavour of pizza at Kahuna Pizzas in Sydney. I remember walking into Tommy's shop in Rose Bay in 04 asking what 'these things' were called.

Despite being so new to the sport, I was fortunate enough to finish 15th in my 3rd Molo this year, and it was largely due to the coaching generosity and help from the paddling community, particularly first and foremost Deano, then DD, Bags and other legends like Kurt Tutt (also from Byron) the Barthos and even Oscar. As you can invisage from this eclectic list, I can't imagine being welcome in all camps if I took sides. All of these blokes just are as they are, not judged, just accepted...for further clarification pls consult Buddha, Ghandi, the Tao, Jung or Kiekiguard.

This site is a news and opinion site, and a good one at that. Rob and Alain report what they find, and (almost) always leave the opinion to us. In Australia we talk about 'the tall poppy syndrome'..which is an aweful cultural reality of looking to cut down those who are doing well. Our media loves to talk about our 'fallen heroes' etc etc. Bags has been charged as we all know. That is all that most of us know, so lets stay the hell out and let him, his people and the authorities sort through the detail.

I am Canada on this. Not my business, and the only sides I take are against injustice and condemnation before proven through a system that we designed. Even then, you don't burn your mates for making a mistake unless that mistake involves you. For some of you it does, and take your own action on that, but don't expect others to condem a a mate just bc you do. That is how religion started and look where that got us...

Baggs you forgot to mention that you havent actually been a meber of BBSLSC for over a decade now, an apart from that your ban stipulates you cannot go near a surf club because "you drank some juice". Even your former coach is telling everyone he no longer owned the ski so you can forget about that excuse. Be a man and own up to something for once instead of making the same old tired excuses because the majority of us Aussies are sick of your crap. If Long Bay wont take you perhaps the Saffas might

Baggs going to Dubai ?
written by Lats, July 27, 2007
http://www.goldcoast.com.au/ar...story.html

27Jul07

WORLD champion kayaker and Olympic silver medallist Nathan Baggaley wants the serious drug charges he is facing dismissed so he can compete at the Beijing Games.

Baggaley, 31, of Mermaid Waters, pleaded not guilty in Southport Magistrates Court yesterday after being committed to stand trial in the Supreme Court on drug charges.

Police randomly intercepted a car Baggeley was driving and found more than 762 ecstasy tablets in a backpack in February.

It is alleged Baggaley and fellow lifesaver, co-accused Kane Thomas Battese, 20, had been to Byron Bay to collect the drugs and bring them back to the Gold Coast.

The bag also contained $1020, which police allege the pair received from selling some of the tablets.

Mr Battese is accused of identical drug charges to Baggaley.

Magistrate Terry Duroux ruled there was sufficient evidence to commit the men to trial.

However, Baggaley's solicitor, Peter Shields, said he would make an application to the Director of Public Prosecutions in Brisbane to have the charges dropped immediately.

He said there was 'no evidence' against Baggaley to send him to trial.

Mr Shields said 'time was of the essence' so Baggaley could qualify and be selected to compete in the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

"We will be making a submission to the DPP to review the decision of the magistrate and we will be asking for that to be done as expeditiously as possible," he said.

"Time is of the essence in relation to Nathan's matter because he needs everything finalised prior to March, 2008, so he is free to be selected in the Beijing Olympics."

Regardless of the DPP's ruling, Baggaley will now head overseas to begin intense training for the selection trials after his strict bail conditions, which had prevented him from travelling abroad, were changed.

He will head to the World Cup surf championships in Dubai in November and a kayaking training camp in Florida in January.

He must provide authorities with details of his itinerary and flight and accommodation details before he leaves as part of his new bail undertaking.

Baggaley and Mr Battese have been charged with a range of drug offences including the possession and supply of ecstasy, possession of methamphetamine and cannabis.

During the committal hearing yesterday, the two police officers gave evidence about the alleged bust about 9.30pm on February 5, this year.

The court was told Mr Battese looked nervous when they seized the bag through the car window and Baggaley volunteered to police that he did not know what was in the bag.

Under cross-examination by Mr Shields, plainclothes officer Constable Blair Casey accepted that Mr Battese was in possession of the bag because it was on the floor between his legs.

However, prosecutor Rosanna Doolan argued Baggaley was still in possession of the drugs because he was driving the car.

Get off the mans Back....
written by Dr Sparky, August 09, 2007
I'd just like to remind you all that a mans innocent until proven guilty...We all live in a Western society here.not Bali! Maybe Baggers did make some mistakes, but he's a good guy who's been caught up in a lot of s**t mainly generated by the narrow minded rednecks of Byron Bay and especially BBSLSC. The town is full of these f*****ts who I have the unfortunate problem of dealing with everyday. You see them out in the surf abusing anyone smaller than them, mainly women and tourists. As for the cops...their trying to victimise Bags in an effort to ruin his name further. It's a total waste of police time, you only ever see the cops when their on the corner of Marvel Street breathalysing all us poor f*****s on the way to work. When there?s 20 drunken parkies bashing a guy at 3.00 am outside my house in town, their nowhere to be seen! So wait for the courts to find Baggers innocent and silence all these critics. Long live the Animal......

enjoy prison nathan. your last stunt has proven once and 4 all your moral standing in the community. manufacture of illicit drugs and then selling them ( to kids mind you ) is the most deplorable act any human can do. plus using your friends and their families names and addresses without their knowledge to gain mobile phones to make your deals is a barstard act. your lies over the past year are coming back to haunt you and anything you have done in paddling is forever tainted. dont bend over.
