ImageEight weeks to the US Champs in San Francisco...  South African Dawid Mocke will be back to defend his title; Oscar Chalupsky will be participating for the first time...

There are signs that in San Francisco the guys are taking this race more seriously than ever before...

Training for Bay area paddlers - with Zsolt Szadovski

Zsolt Szadovszk probably represents America's best chance of wresting the US title away from the South Africans: ranked eighth in world on the Surfski.info World Rankings, he had some pretty good results last season - 5th in last year's US Champs; 7th at the Dubai Shamaal and 6th at Molokai.

"I personally completed my foundation [for the 2007 US Champs] in the last 3 months," he said. "And now it is time to pick up the pace."

Zsolt is running weekend training for the next 6 weeks on the race course, combining speed and endurance training on the choppy water of the bay, with sessions at tricky points "under the gate, point Diablo ..maybe point Bonita".

Downwind Video Clip

Zsolt may be seen (briefly!) in a video clip taken by Carter Johnson when the pair did a downwind run recently from Muir Beach to Pt Bonita then down the Golden Gate Channel to Sausalito. The ocean part of this run will be in the U.S. Surfski Championship course. A 15kt northwester was blowing at the time.

(Carter shot the clip with a Pentax Optio w30 mounted on a pocket tripod duct taped to the front of his Huki S1-X ski.)

Here's a second clip, also courtesy of Carter...
