ImageThe ARB Surf Ski World Cup, held on July 1 2007 in Durban, South Africa was an exceptional event in all kinds of ways - from the excellent organisation to the largest prize purse ever in the history of the sport.  Even the weather was exceptional - 4m sea swells combined with a 35kt southwester gave the competitors an extreme downwind run.  For me it was the most exciting, fun downwind run I'd ever done.

But most people probably didn't realise that a massive logistical effort was under way to film the race too...

Filming the ARB Surf Ski World Cup

Greg Kitto has been all over the world making surf ski movies.  (We're about to start selling some of the best here on surfski.info).  "The footage we captured on 1 July is the best I've ever seen," he said, "we have over two hours of incredible film, showing the best paddlers in the world in those massive conditions!"

Cameras on shore, on escort boats and on a helicopter captured spectacular images as the paddlers rocketed down the swells on their way from Amanzimtoti to Durban's beachfront.

Video Clip Teaser

You can see just a glimpse of the footage in this clip posted on YouTube...  the clip was supplied courtesy of the ARB Surf Ski World Cup organising committee (www.surfskiworldcup.com).

This clip makes for exciting viewing & may well be the breakthrough video to making ski paddling gain mainstream attention!
Apart from the magnitude of understanding how extreme the WC conditions where, it showcases what downwind paddling is all about & it's awesome to see these elite guys up close in gaining insight to their techniques and how their craft handle these conditions.
Can't wait to see the entire video!
