ARB have given us permission to show some of the video footage from the ARB Surf Ski World Cup - raced on 1 July 2007 in Durban, South Africa.
For those who don't know, the race was held in 35kt winds and 4m swells: ideal World Cup conditions. The course took the paddlers out from Amanzimtoti Beach, around some buoys and downwind to the Durban Harbour mouth.

At the harbour mouth, only the first two paddlers, Oscar Chalupsky and Hank McGregor (both of South Africa) were allowed to proceed in front of a huge container ship that chose that moment to come into port. Oscar took a line against the harbour wall which proved decisive - Hank chose to go head on into the 35kt wind and dropped nearly 200m behind to come second.
The video shows what the conditions were like - Oscar's GPS track shows that he was reaching speeds of 35-40kph...
