With entries coming from all over the
world, the organisers of the Dubai Shamaal 2007 today sounded a warning that
paddlers wishing to take part in the prestigious race need to make their
bookings NOW if they are to stand any chance of renting skis or even of booking
flights to the United Arab Emirates.
 "The race is only one of a number of
events happening at the same time," host club DSKC Club President Wayne Randall
explained, "and the Dubai Sevens, for example, attracts in excess of 70,000
visitors for the weekend. The airlines are filling up fast."
In order to secure delivery, the race
organisers must order new skis within the next two weeks. "If entrants
haven't ordered their rental skis by then, there simply won't be any," said
Wayne. "There's no way that people can expect to arrive and enter on the
day. They have to book NOW!"
Richest Race in
Surf Ski History
The Dubai Shamaal, being run on 30
November 2007 has the biggest purse of prize money ever offered for a Surf Ski
race - $35,000 with $12,000 going to the winner. In addition "Fenn
hotspots" offer $1000 to the first paddler through each of three gates during
the race - a total of $3000 - adding spice to the race and tactical conundrums
for the paddlers: do they sprint for the hotspots, or conserve energy for the
overall prize?
The "Cash to Compete" promotion (where
the top paddlers in selected races around the world have sponsored to attend)
and the "Shamaal Anchorman" competition (which will see one lucky entrant flown
to Dubai, all expenses paid, to take ownership of and race in a $6,500 Epic
Kayaks V10Elite) have caused unprecedented interest in the race.
