The
26.7mile (43km) Mayor's Cup race takes place on Sunday 14th
October in New York, USA. The race
course takes the paddlers on a grueling circumnavigation of Manhattan Island. Surfski.info will be covering the event live...
Challenging Race
Apart from
the distance, the course itself is challenging: the event website says, "One of
the trickiest segments will be Hell's Gate, combining water from Long Island
Sound, the Harlem River and the East River to create standing waves, whirlpools
and very confused water. The East
River's currents can move as quickly as 7 knots. The Battery - where water from
the Hudson, East River and Buttermilk Channel converge - can produce waters
with a 3 to 5 foot chop"...
Live Coverage on Surfski.info
We'll be in
contact with an escort boat following the surfski paddlers - and will be
experimenting with near-real-time video (i.e. the escort boat will have a video
camera and PC connected to the Internet and we're going to see how practical it
is to upload video clips as the action happens).
Increased Prize Money - increased competition
The prize
purse this year totals some $15,000 of which $5,000 will go to the faster
paddler to complete the course.
The lure of
the prize money is at least one reason why the most competitive field ever will
line up on Saturday, including:
Greg Barton: 4 time Olympic medalist (2-x Gold), around
Manhattan record holder (3:21), 2x US Surf Ski Champs, 2x World 10,000 meter
Champion and too many others to mention.
Herman Chalupsky: 2 x
Molokai winner. Over the last 20 years he's been one of the top three surf ski
paddlers in the world.
Dorian Wolter: Former German National Wild Water Champion and
the previous record holder for the kayak and OC1 will be there to recapture the
record…
Eric Borgnes: The 2006 winner of the Blackburn, he's finish
sixth at the 2004 US Surf Ski Champs and just won the Chicago Shore Marathon on
Lake Michigan.
Ian Gray: South African paddler from Durban. 11th at the
US Ski Champs last week.
Zsolt Szadovszki: Former member of the Hungarian National Sprint
team. He finished 7th at Molokai this
year.
Rene Appel: Former professional wind surfer and now the
National W.S. Coach of Hong Kong, Rene finished 22nd at Molokai this year.
