The Dragon has roared!  The inaugural Hong Kong Dragon Run was a great success by all accounts - perfect conditions, tough competition, brilliant organisation...

Tactics, Ships, Waves...

When Billy Harker, race director (and the commentator for our live race coverage) said that Dawid had taken a deep line after the Fenn Hotspot buoy, Mocke fans all over the world must have wondered why.  The answer was simple: Dawid had done his homework over the previous few days.  "I knew that was where the fastest water was!" he said afterwards.

Dawid's race went exactly according to plan.  "I knew Ken Wallace from Australia was going to be fastest off the line at the beginning and I just tried to stay with him on the way out," he said.

The bumpy conditions were to his liking and he passed Ken well before the Fenn Hotspot, creating a considerable lead by the time he reached the buoy first to win the $1000 hotspot prize.

Then came the downwind leg and he took the deeper line and extended his lead.  "I wanted a lead on Lewis Laughlin coming into the flat," he said.  Tahitian Lewis has a formidable reputation for his speed on flat water.  The last time he and Dawid raced together at the 2007 Molokai Challenge, Lewis overtook Dawid late in the race to win - on flat water.

By the time he reached "Satellite Bay" some 7km from the finish Dawid had a lead of some 1:15 on Lewis.  In the smoother water Lewis made up some ground, but Dawid crossed the line 52 seconds ahead of his rival - his tactics playing off to perfection.

In the post-race interview, Dawid dedicated the race to his wife Nikki and said the US$5000 and the US$1000 Fenn Hotspot bonus would be going to Nikki's Olympic campaign.  (Nikki has qualified for the Beijing Olympics in K4.)

Lewis

Lewis was full of praise for the other paddlers, singling out the veterans Oscar Chalupsky and Dean Gardiner.

"I just tried to hang on," he said. "Dawid was strong the whole way; he deserved his win."

Oscar

Oscar enjoyed the course.  "The wind had died a bit," he said, "but there were bumps the whole way.  I found the last 6km just too hard.  I tried to catch Lewis but left it too late."

Oscar was on an inside line near the start of the downwind leg when a passenger ship passed in front of him.  Dean Gardiner, who was with him at the time, turned to go around the back of the ship.  Oscar elected to slow down and wait for it to go past, but he hadn't counted on the massive wake that it was pushing up.

"The wave was huge," he said, "like a six foot shore break!  It broke right over me."

He had to work hard to catch up to Dean and rode his wake for a while before dropping him to attack Lewis.  He'd left it too late and finished the race in third position.

"It was a good training session," he said.

Mako
written by Mark Buck, November 26, 2007
In the pictures it looked like Lewis and one of the Australians were on the Mako Elite skis, not Mako 6 skis. Can anybody confirm?

Mako6 skis used in The Dragon Run
written by James Shortis, November 27, 2007
I can confirm that all the Fenn skis paddled by Lewis, Ken, Dean, David and Dawid were Mako6 (see the 'official results' above).

I know this because I unloaded the container when they arrived in Hong Kong.

Also, please look closely at the ski Lewis is paddling, you will see the "Mako6" decal on the nose.

Hi James as an indicator the results chart doesn't differentiate between the different versions of the Epic V10 ski's in the race.

If there was a Mako Elite in the race, you'd think Dawid would be on it since he "tested" it recently.

different types of skis
written by James Shortis, November 27, 2007
tough crowd!

Let me try and think back and remember what type of craft each and every paddler was paddling ....

obviously from the photos, Oscar was on a V10 elite, otherwise everyone else (other than a handful of guys) were on V10 Ultras.

If there is anything more specific you want to know, please drop me a PM.

We will have more photographs up on the race website soon and you will be able to take a look and see for yourselves what type of ski everyone was paddling.

Fenn skis
written by Rob Mousley, November 27, 2007
The skis in Hong Kong were Mako6s

There are 5
Mako Elites in Dubai that will be used by Hank McGregor, Dawid Mocke and Daryl Bartho and two others. Lewis hasn't paddled one yet so isn't sure that he wants to do the race in it. Can't remember who's going to paddle the 5th - Dean Gardiner perhaps?

Skis
written by Mark Buck, November 27, 2007
Thanks for the corrections. Because of the new Fenn logo decal and the placement of the Mako 6 decal it looked like the ski Dawid used in SA compared to the one he used in Hong Kong.

Anyone care to bet????
written by Richard, November 29, 2007
considering the course, recent results, and internet based paddlers right now, why have the bets not strarted > here goes.

1 Hank - not the machine for no reason
2 Tim Jacobs - really watch him
3 Dawid
4 Barry - watch him
5 Darryl bartho
6 Lewis - taihiti dynamite
7 Herman the better paddling brother of Oscar
8 Oscar
9 Ken Wallace
8 Clint Pretorius
9 Bevan Manson
10 Brett Bartho

Remember we have an upleg section with hotspots, okes will go like crazy at the beginning for the loot. Does the paddler wait until downwind and go and tuck behind the rest and not worry about the hotspots, and rather get the main carrot?

Then a downwind - who will be tired from the hotspotting?

Canal - who has gas left and flatwater sprint speed?

Who will be clever and team up and share the bounty to work together.

So many options - only the top 3 have the pedigree and fitness to go the whole way by themselves - as well as mental stamina.

this is all baed on actually having some wind though
