Breaking news: Daryl Bartho won today's Cape Point Challenge in gruelling conditions.  Photos, race report and results will be up later today, but here's a brief heads up...

The conditions:

were gruelling.  The first half of the race was a grind into a light ESE wind on water that had varying degrees of choppiness; as usual the last 4km stretch to the Point was like a washing machine...

The 5km leg back to Buffels Bay offered small runs for those that had the energy and a small break upset a few paddlers as they left Buffels after the obligatory ten minute stop (namely me!)

The last 20 km back to Fish Hoek were extremely hard work - there was very little help for the paddlers and many overheated as the sun beat down from a cloudless sky.

Dawid Mocke showed incredible class once again, having had a nightmare first half.  Having spent most of the last two weeks recovering from a bug acquired in Perth, he wasn't expected to feature in the race and when he arrived at Buffels Bay miles behind the leaders he was in a bad physical state, shaking and feeling nauseous.  However his wife Nikki said that he hoovered up 4 sandwiches and cups of coffee and took off like a rocket, eventually coming home in 4th position.

As I left the beach paddlers were still coming in - and prize giving is scheduled for 14h30.  We'll try to get the results up ASAP if we can source them from the organisers.  Alain is on his way home as I write this and should have a selection of photos up shortly.

Results:

  1. Daryl Bartho
  2. Peter Cole
  3. Paul Marais
  4. Dawid Mocke

Well played DB. Show them Capies how it's done, on their own waters!

DB @ CPC

Couldn't be more pleased for my man DB: he was up front at the US Ski Champs in SF but stuffed up his line heading home and finished 5th, he and his brother Wes came close at the SA Doubles Champs (2nd), he was right there in Dubai (6th) and in Perth (2nd)...Everyone knows what a brilliant all-around paddler Daryl is
and he's won more than a few big races but to come through in a high profile WC race after a bunch of 'close but no cigar' performances is really cool. Not only because DB is a great paddler, but he's also a humble and classy guy...who happens to make world class sushi. Way to go mate!
