Rescue Techniques

So what do you do if you find yourself in the water without your ski?  What if your buddy is still there circling around you in his ski?  What's the best method of rescue?

Renowned ultra-marathon paddlers Heather and Brandon Nelson of Bellingham, WA (that's Washington State, USA, not Western Australia!) recently took some time out to investigate and to practise rescue techniques.

The resulting articles are well worth reading.  Here they are:

Of course you also need to be thoroughly practised at remounting your ski.  Click here for our step-by-step tutorial.

Happy (and safe) paddling!

Good Info...

Thanks for the rescue technique tips for those of us who paddle in cold water. I was wondering if there are any articles and/or links to the several fatal accidents in the Northern Hemisphere involving surf ski paddlers and cold water?

Sea Kayaker magazine has two good articles in the current issue Feb 2008. One is "Cold Water Consequences...What you need to know." (Pg 24) and the other is "Rescue on Lake Michigan" (Pg 17) although these articles are NOT currently on their website at www.seakayakermag.com.

These articles and other published reports help to bring about an awareness as to the situations that occurred leading up to the unfortunate event(s) while hopefully educating the reader as to "what to" and "what not to do" when paddling in frigid waters.
