Feeling that Surfski.Info has focused on
some illustrious efforts throughout 2007, your Antipodean correspondent feels
compelled to file this report about the previously unheralded, annual
‘Tupperware' Dare held at City Beach, Perth, Western Australia - between
Christmas and New Year's Day - to provide some balance and light relief for
your readers.
'Big Kev' powers home at the Tupperware Dare in Perth, WA over the Christmas holiday
The Pounders
The ‘Pounders' are a raggedy-arsed bunch of
irregulars, comprising some very good paddlers and some very bad paddlers, who
paddle 3 days a week from City Beach SLC under the informal stewardship of the
charismatic Ken Richards, Founder, President for Life and sporadic
Editor-in-Chief of ‘The Doghouse', our e-journal.
To counterbalance any excessively anal/ego
driven competitive inclination among our disparate group, the serious ocean
racing calendar is spiked with innovative events like the now famous "Groyne to
Esky" (‘Esky' is the Australian vernacular for a portable, insulated, beer cool
box) and - among others - the
‘Tupperware' Dare
The race or rather, demolition derby,
involves participants paddling standard plastic surf skis only, around a short,
figure of eight course - to ensure maximum carnage - and back to shore, working
through a serious of elimination rounds until a victor emerges.
Before the possibility of appearing on the
www via Surfski.Info emerged, the only prize has been bragging rights for the
rest of the season.
