All the top paddlers will tell you that in order to increase your paddling speed, there's nothing like sprint training.  Sometimes, though it's difficult to get motivated - it's hard work after all.

shark sea kayak hoax or not?
When sprint training really matters...

Looks as though this guy just found the answer to the motivation problem...

Hoax or not?

Louis Stanford sent us this photo - does anyone know its provenance?  Is it real, or a photoshop job?  We'll send a set of surfski.info stickers to the first person to prove the origin of the image.

We'll also send a set of surfski.info stickers to the person who comes up with the funniest caption for the photo...!

Looks real to me

Had a fin just like that one dive under me at the Total Sports Challenge in Gordon's Bay last weekend. Only noticed it due to the sound of water movement, am normally fixated on the front of the ski. I asked the guy next to me if he saw it and he said yeah but it was on my side i.e. more my problem than his, I then did an interval and joined the group in front smilies/smiley.gif Just what I needed to get ahead.

Looks fake to me

If you enlarge the photo and look at the reflection in front of the paddler you will notice what appears to be the reflection of a white building with very straight sides (calm water). Although there is a white object on the deck of the kayak, it wouldn't cast a reflection with straight edges, look at the reflections in the rest of the photo(jagged)Totally bogus!

Shark Photo
written by Craig McLeod, January 17, 2008
This photo appeared in the NZ Herald newspaper on Wednesday 16 January. It was taken at Great Barrier Island north east of Auckland. Supposedly the story behind it is that this paddler and another were towing lures for fish behind their kayaks when a couple of bronze whaler sharks turned up (they reckon they were about 2-3m long) and went after the bait. Initially the guy tried to paddle away however when this didn't work he cut the line.

This is part of a greater issue here in NZ this summer as due to very warm weather and water, there have been a much greater number of shark sightings and encounters than normal. The biggest story from the last week is when a 4m shark believed to now be a Tiger shark attacked and damaged a surf lifesaving IRB that tried to herd it away from Omaha Beach (also north of Auckland).

Cheers

The yellow kayak leading the shark to the red kayak is strangely reminiscent of the movie "The Hunt for Red October."

To Nico de Wet - the fins you saw in Gordons Bay were dolphins !! We often encounter them along the mountain between the old harbour and Steenbras Point. They sometimes completely ignore us, and other times they follow and play with us for extended periods. Johan van Rooyen and myself once had them follow us right into the shallow area where the TotalSports' start was.
