1 April 2008: Honolulu, Hawaii.

B.S. Forshore, the newly appointed race director, announced today that 2008 will feature a special change for the world-famous Molokai World Championship event: the course is going to be reversed for the first time ever.

Molokai 2008 - new route
Can they be serious?

"We've been thinking for months about coming up with something new," Forshore said. "After all, the race has been run from the island of Molokai to Oahu for 32 years. The guys are simply tired of it."

Secret Meeting

Last weekend Surfski.info learned that the decision was made after a secret meeting at an undisclosed location on the North Shore of Oahu. The meeting, Forshore admitted, included a high-ranking official with the ICF. The presence of the ICF official raised a few significant questions, especially after the controversial course change that saw only eight men crack six hours last year.

ICF Involvement?

Foreshore denied that rumors of a cash incentive were offered by the ICF.  "We thought why not run it backwards? The consensus was that an upwind race would be completely different. That way we'll have really challenging conditions. The trade winds should give us a steady 20-25kts wind with waves up to 10ft. That should sort the men from the boys!"

Mixed Reaction

The course change has been met with mixed reviews. Last year's winner Lewis Laughlin, the first man not from South Africa or Australia to win since 1979, said he looked forward to the challenge. Dean Gardiner, the nine-time winner, said, "Give me a 100 grand and free beer for the rest of my life and I wouldn't start. Only a South African would be insane enough to participate." Even more surprising was the response of 11-time winner Oscar Chalupsky. Incredibly, after learning of the fateful switch, Chalupsky said nothing. When pressed for a comment, the ever-loquacious downwind specialist replied: "I'll call you back," his voice choked with emotion.  Fifteen minutes later, Chalupsky fired off a profanity-laced e-mail to every human being he's ever met. "I'll still win the $*(##$(#$ race," he said.

Chalupsky's churlish reply left B.S. ("Call me B.S.") Forshore unfazed.  "Not only have we come up with a novel concept, the last time Oscar was at a loss for words was...well, I can't recall it ever happening. That alone has to be good for the sport."

Entry Fees Doubled

Incredibly, Forshore said since the race is likely to take the winner more than twice as long, they plan to double the entry fee. Stay tuned for details...

Isn't surf ski races supposed to be downwind in most part of the course? What's the strategy now if you're going against the wind?

alright, i come clean on this most hallowed of holidays: rob mousley made me write this cruel hoax. in fact, he had Mr. Foreshore tell me that I'd not be able to enter Molokai unless I contributed to the story. It's all Rob's fault. Promise!

Ridiculous
written by Alain Jaques, April 01, 2008
This is ridiculous. How can you give such short notice of the course change? I wasn?t planning to go to Molokai but with the new course I am as keen as a bean. Now I have to make some fast arrangements. The start looks awesome; you are bound to break your ski getting through the surf which means you will be paddling upwind with a leaking boat. What a sneaky challenge, you guys are smart! My river paddling experience will come in handy and I will be sure to pack some duct tape and a few branches to splint the ski.

not all BS
written by DeAnne Hemmens, April 01, 2008
Since this is a joke, are they going to change the entry fees back down to $90 or is it really $185? Seems like the joke is on all of us.

No wind
written by richard von wildemann, April 01, 2008
If it's anything like last year it won't matter! Haha ha smilies/cheesy.gif

It would actually be a downwind, because the last bit in 07 was into a light head wind and current.

Good luck to all the 08 edition athletes.

Cheers

Logistics will be easier
written by Kenny Howell, April 01, 2008
This new course will make it easier and more economical since we can just fly back to Oahu from Molokai instead of booking the apartments for 3 nights minimum. I'm stoked! smilies/wink.gif

Entry fee - comment from the organisers
written by Rob Mousley, April 01, 2008
Yep, the entry fee has increased from last year. I asked Charles Brand, part of the race organisation team about it and he sent me this response:

"Higher entry fee this year

The race was run on a total shoestring until last year. The result was that the prize money actually came from entry fees as opposed to the entry fees being used to run the race. As an example, the second placed surf-ski paddler in 2006 got a voucher for a carry bag from a local sports shop as his prize, NOTHING else for a world class athlete! Basically, we are trying to elevate the race to give some respect to the incredible performances that we are witness to. This is where surfing was about 15 years ago, and we are committed to enabling the top paddlers to be able to earn a living out of this, soon. Have a look at the entry fees for the top and amateur surfing events, and the $180 we are charging looks very reasonable."
