Three weeks to go until the 2008 edition of the Molokai World Championships... Here's an update on some of the logistical and other information.
Logistics
The organizers have confirmed that there will be a container taking skis across to Molokai Island. This means competitors have two choices:
- Send your ski in the container. This will leave Oahu on Monday 11th May in order to be in Molokai by the 18th. Contact Tao at +1 808.306.6850.
- Make arrangements to send your ski on your escort boat - this will most likely leave the day before the race.
Finding a place to stay on Molokai Island
This seems to be quite tricky - I haven't had any reply to emails enquiring about places to stay near the race venue. Perhaps this is easier to arrange once you're actually in Hawaii.
OC-1 Race
The OC-1 community is having a separate Molokai race on 27th May and although OC-1s are welcome on May 18th, the organizers are expecting fewer than in previous years.

Closing Date for Entries
Entries will be accepted until Sunday, May 11th 2008. Late entries ($200) will be accepted until midnight on 16th May.
Entries so far
There are 50 entries so far - including 13 OC-1 paddlers. The race organizers are expecting up to 100 paddlers to take part on 18th May.

Escort Boats
Escort Boats ARE compulsory this year - mandated by the US Coast Guard for safety reasons.

Live Coverage/GPS Tracking
Surfski.info will be following the race live, with commentary provided by Alain Jaques who will be talking to observers in escort boats. In addition we will have up to 40 GPS units on skis - readers will be able to select which paddlers to watch (all 40 at once might present a bit of an "information-overload" problem!)
Paddlers to Watch
There will be fierce competition at the front of the fleet as usual. Watch out for:
- Dawid Mocke (RSA)
- Oscar Chalupsky (RSA)
- Herman Chalupsky (RSA)
- Barry Lewin (RSA)
- Hank McGregor (RSA)
- Ian Gray (RSA)
- Steve Woods (RSA)
- Peter Cole (RSA)
- Zsolt Szadovski (HUN/USA)
- Lewis Laughlin (TAH)
- Tim Jacobs (AUS)
- Dean Gardiner (AUS)
- Martin Kenny (AUS)
In the women's field, an equally fierce battle is expected between:
- Maggie Twigg-Smith (HI)
- DeAnne Hemmens (USA)
- Alexa Lombard (RSA)
- Katie Pocock (NZ)

My wife and myself are somehow entered as OC1 but we will be doing the ski
Have sent e-mails to the organisers over the last two months but no reply.
Hopefully they'll see this
