"Well at least the wind's going in the right direction!"  The latest windguru prediction says 7-8kt Easterly - but as we all know, windguru often underestimates the wind strength.  Intellicast is forecasting 12kt northeast.

The OC-1 paddlers had a similar forecast 4 days before their race and had the fastest time ever - so no need to panic just yet.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - COMPETITORS TAKE NOTE!

Race Registration

Registration, distribution of race shirts and stickers will take place in the conference room of the Park Shore Hotel, Waikiki from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 15th May - NOT at the Kona Brewery as previously scheduled.  Please pass this information onto other competitors.

Prize Giving

The prize giving and post-race banquet will take place at Lulu's, at the Park Shore Hotel, Waikiki from 5.30pm onwards on Sunday 18th May after the race.  A full meal and three kegs of beer are being served up - after the beer runs out, a cash bar will operate.

Logistics

There will be three official race boats for general race administration and safety.

Six jetskis will cruise up and down the fleet - if they find someone who has lost their escort boat, the jetskis will be there to help out...  There will be other jetskis with a film crew on board.

Finish

At the finish Robyn Singh and her team from the Hawaii Canoe & Kayak Club will be there to help take the skis out, etc.

Live coverage - GPS Units

A number of competitors - including the top male and female seeds - will be issued with GPS tracking units.  Robyn Singh and helpers will be attaching these to the skis before the race - please cooperate with her.

Make Like a Tourist

Competitors are spreading out all over the island (many skis have already left for Molokai).  A group of us went down to Pearl Harbour yesterday to visit the museums:

  • Get there early if you want to visit the Arizona Monument - the waiting period was already 2 1/2 hours by the time we got there!
  • Don't try to do all three museums: I recommend the USS Bowfin submarine museum, it's fascinating.
  • If you're really keen on battleships, take a personal guided tour of the USS Missouri - otherwise you're just walking around a massive ship.
  • The Naval Aviation museum was a disappointment - but it has a couple of classic WWII aircraft.

Jon Emerson just posted this on the Outrigger newsgroup:

If there are paddlers looking for escort boats, let me know. There are a
couple boats available.
