The South African National Surfski Committee today confirmed the go ahead for the Surfski World Cup race to be held in Durban on the 28th June 2008.
The news release from the NSSC said:
"We anticipate the format to be substantially the same as last year. Again, it will be a weekend affair with an international relay event, plus the World Cup on the day with the most favourable conditions for downwind racing. The race will be approximately 25 to 30km and hopefully this will be from point A to B, giving the best of what the local conditions can offer in downwind racing.
There will however be a great emphasis on safety, and the final course will be set a few days prior to the event and subject to conditions.
The competition venue will be similar to that of last year with great spectator and entertainment facilities. The proposed venues include the Durban Undersea Club, at Vetchies Beach, or alternatively one of theother popular Durban beaches with similar facilities.
We are still unable to confirm the prize money as we are still awaiting finalisation of sponsorships. We anticipate feedback from sponsors by the beginning of next week and will publish this information on the website as soon as possible.
All race information will be published on the Surfski World Cup website on Friday, 6th June 2008, including entry details, weekend programme, race rules, etc."
Live Coverage - Championchip GPS Tracking
Surfski.info is pleased to announce that Championchip, well known for their race timing solutions, will be providing 60 of their new GPS Tracking units for the races - both World Cup and relay - enabling spectators to follow the progress of the paddlers real-time via a web interface.
Our intention is to partner with Championchip to offer this solution to all the World Series races around the world. With expert commentary also provided via the web and, in the future, live video streaming, we are changing the way the sport is watched.
Instead of waving the paddlers goodbye at the start and waiting at the other end of the course, we'll now have continuous live updates, with both GPS positions and commentary. We envisage a party atmosphere at the race venue with viewers watching the action live on big screens.
This also gives sponsors a platform for brand exposure and we believe that this is key to providing value to the sponsors.

Not that I am living there any more, but just out of interest, why was a decision made not to have one of the South African WC Events in Cape Town?
There are some classic paddles and we will not even get into the other reasons to have an event there.
I thought it would be rotated?
