One of the major changes requested for the 2009 Surfski World Series was to change it to correspond with the calendar year.  We wanted that too - but what to do about the rest of 2008?  The answer: The International Downwind 2 Dubai Mini Series!

Downwind 2 Dubai!

2009 Surfski.info World Series

We can't tell you exactly what's coming with the 2009 World Series (it's a deadly secret and we'd have to kill you if we told you) but it's big and exciting.

What I can say though is that there will be more races in more countries; everyone who participates in a World Series race will be ranked... and there will be sponsorship.

The first race in the series will be the first race after the Dubai Shamaal 2008.  You can work out why!  The last race will be the Dubai Shamaal 2009!

Ok, enough of that - but keep watching the site in the next few weeks as we roll out the new rules for the series (formulated after an exhaustive global consultation process!) and further announcements.

Downwind 2 Dubai Mini Series

The idea of this series is that it's a filler for 2008 - and it'll give us a chance to iron out any wrinkles in the new series rules.  A dress rehearsal if you like.

So we'll be doing everything that we would for the real series - setting race star-rankings; allocating points; running the World Rankings...  And there will be $5,000 for the winners to be presented at the Dubai Shamaal.

Come to Dubai!

Dubai have come to the party in a big way - giving us a total of US$10,000 sponsorship for the mini-series.

I've just mentioned the $5,000 prize pool for the series winners - what about the other $5K?

The answer is that we're giving $500 to the local hero of each of the series races from now until Dubai Shamaal 2008.  The only kicker is that you have to go to Dubai to pick up the cash!

Local Heroes

What are Local Heroes?  The idea is that there should be as wide as possible a distribution of international paddlers - so we couldn't have a single top guy go to all the races and clean up!

Here are the races in the series so far:

Race Country Date
North Sea Champs Belgium 2008/07/12
US Surfski Champs USA 2008/09/20
Chicago Shoreline Marathon USA 2008/09/27
Defis Kayak - Guadeloupe Guadeloupe 2008/10/04
British Cup Wales 2008/10/11
NY Mayors Cup 2008 USA 2008/10/19
Dragon Run 2008 Hong Kong 2008/11/22
Dubai 2008 United Arab Emirates 2008/11/28

Up to 3 more races will be added shortly.

Let the games begin....!

More races
written by Rob Mousley, July 17, 2008
The SA race will be the Knysna to Sedgefield on 15 November. This race is the Single Ski champs for South Africa, and is central for Cape, Eastern Cape & KZN paddlers (more or less - at least it's not in either Cape Town or Durban!)

In Australia it will be the King of the Cape race - we'd like to do more races, but we're going to have to settle for one in Oz this year
