One week after the 25km Soualiga Challenge race between the islands of St Barth and St Martin, the French national team is still training on the Caribbean Sea around Guadeloupe Island.

Training Program

Given that on the one hand surfski paddling is growing fast in France (with around 1000 paddlers registering in the national series, more than 450 competed in the final race of the French national championship, won by Oscar Chalupsky - with a short 20 seconds lead on Benoit Leroux), and on the other hand the fact that French competitors are not as fast as those from the southern hemisphere, the French federation as decided to establish a training and racing program for its top 10 athletes.

As a result of the new development policy, 6 athletes (Benoit  Leroux, Yann Le Tocquet, David Szlachta, Jean Rillard, Marc Le Mentec and Edwin Lucas) and their coach (Stephane Roudault) are enjoying the outstanding conditions offered in Guadeloupe : warm water, hot  breeze, beautiful landscapes...

Guadeloupe - one of the best places on earth

Guadeloupe is probably one of the best places on earth for surfski paddling with lots of downwind routes and a consistent swell coming from the Atlantic Ocean.

Thanks to the huge effort of organizer Olivier Tanton, our training camp was based in the harbor of "Le Moule". This typical Guadeloupe city is the well known surfing spot where the 2004 waveski world-championship took place. And believe me the swell is great!

Arriving on the reef from the North-East, the 2.5m swell creates massive but easy surfing 3m waves! Here follows some nice pics of one of our sessions.

We spent the rest of the week doing long downwind paddles on both coasts of the island, volcano trekking on "la Souffrière", drinking local rums and beers, and making like tourists...

Defis Kayak

Defis Kayak 08
Defis Kayak - 32km downwind crossing...

Only one day to go before the "Defi Kayak", the 33km race between the island of "La désirade" and St Francois, and we can only regret the lack of international elite paddlers to assess our improvements, and make of the Caribbean tour a really big event.

Results should follow shortly after the race.

I just received the race report and results a few minutes ago - they'll be up tomorrow. Benoit Leroux won the race with Stephane Roudault second. Local hero was Franck Fifils who battled on to the finish in very hot, flat, windless conditions despite suffering heat stroke.

Hi Gary, unfortunately no sponsorship. Mark Lewin has gone the extra mile to make sure that orders have gone through smoothly and containers have been shipped correctly. Result is that the Caribbean is now flooded with all of his products. epic has shown some interest in getting some market here but their skis are very expensive compared to what we can get from the SA manufacturers. In the interests of the sport, I hope we get some other makes of skis out here soon, but for now, Icons rule in the Caribbean.
