The Aussies are back with a vengeance, taking three of the top five spots in today's US$130,000 Dubai Shamaal Surfski race.

Hot & Flat

The day started with an encouraging wind from the WNW but it died as the fleet arrived at the windward buoy and the race became a hard, hot slog back to the mainland.

The start of the race was problematic as the paddlers kept false starting - but the starter eventually got the fleet away and Aussie Jeremy Cotter charged immediately with Hank McGregor in close pursuit.

Thule Gates

Jeremy was first past the Thule gates, earning product and $1,000 in the process. The two men were leading by about 50m at the turn but things fell apart for the number one seed, Hank McGregor, at that point when he took a line too close to shore, leaving the rest of the field to benefit from the cleaner waves further out to sea.

Taking the Right Line

As Cotter tired, Tim Jacobs came through to lead the race.  South African Clint "Lightee" Pretorius, meanwhile, taking the advice of local paddlers, headed out to sea on the extreme left of the fleet.  As the race approached the harbor, Clint moved to within 30m of Tim Jacobs, but he just couldn't overtake the big Australian.

As Jacobs crossed the line he launched his paddle like a javelin and lifted his arms in triumph...

In the women's race, Australian Kirsty Holmes took the women's Thule Gate, but wasn't strong enough over the distance to hold off the South African duo of Michelle Eray and Alexa Cole.

Success
written by Gavin Dickinson, December 02, 2008
Surfski won today. You had record money, record web traffic, a huge spike in web traffic, 7 TV camera's shooting the race, the most talented & diverse group of pro paddlers ever in the same race, racing for the biggest cash prize ever offered in the sport. You also had paddlers with very different skills, mixing from all over the World for a few days, under the palm trees & clear skies of Dubai. It was magic. There was indeed real competition for the Constructors in that the pre race seeding listed roughly 1/2 the top 20 in Epic & the other in Fenn. Fenn took the majority of riders in the top 10 & Epic won the races for Men, Women & Jr's. I hope all of you try the Shamaal once in your life. smilies/grin.gif smilies/smiley.gif. The other reality of today, as SS.I lead with - is that the Oz boys delivered in Molo 2008 and have done it the Dubai on the big stage today. Well done.

Awesome result Timmy, well done mate.

Can Tim claim to be World Champion of the discipline? Well everyone who is anyone was there, you'd have to think so, just a supreme effort.

How funny were some of the comments that were flying during the live feed last night... hilarious!!

Hopefully we get to see a DVD of the race soon enough.

Cheers.

A Tad Harsh
written by Stewart, December 03, 2008
Regarding Mr Big's comment on Timmy B, a little harsh I would have thought.

It's a bit like asking Usain Bolt or Maurice Green to run a cross country race and expect him to take it out, very unlikely. Timmy is an absolutely fabulous paddler. As well as his Olympic and World Champ medals in sprint, he has won medals in marathon too. He's certainly not the type of bloke to go around shouting about how good he is.... so I'm not sure what humble pie he has to eat.

Was great to see kayaking champions testing themselves in a totally different aspect of the sport and give it their best, good on them.

Who the hell is Mr Big?
written by Dane Sloss, December 03, 2008
I wonder how many races he has won? probably couldnt beat an egg with an axe :-) A man who feels the need to call himself Mr big must be a tad insecure..

In australia we have all seen tim line up against kenny over 1000m and get taught a lesson. Thats why its a different sport and it should be remembered that while there are no olympics for surf ski that both are great atheletes. Im sure most of the flatwater guys were just in dubai for a free holiday and its hardly their peak season at the moment. Im sure that if kenny was serious he would be right near the pointy end.

What happened to an all south african top five? who ever made that outlandish call should be the one eating humble pie.. I wonder if him and Mr Big are related?

A little less arrogance from a few might stop it from being spoilt for others.

It would be great if we can see what skis were used by the paddlers - like the results from the Hong Kong race. That way we can see how the 'constructors' competition faired as opposed to some obscure and vague remark about there being "roughly 1/2 the top 20 in Epic & the other in Fenn".

From looking at the results and the photos, it would seem that probably 7 of the top 10 would have been on a Fenn.

Great to see the ozzies getting some great results again!
written by Brett Bartho, December 03, 2008
By the way,I was the one that predicted a top 5 saffa clean sweep and how wrong I was!Hats off to TJ for bringing home the cake and winning the world's biggest race!...and to the rest of the ozzie boys for doing extremely well as well.I was extremely surprised by Matt B and Hanks results as I know that they were absolutely flying in training befor they left....but who knows they may have killed each other too much in training.

Anyway some great personal achievements in those results and I must say that surfski paddling as a sport owes so much to the Dubai Shamaal organizers and sponsors and also the amazing surfski.info team for all the hype and coverage they are getting the sport!!!!!!!!!but also to al the amazing athletes that make the racing so exciting to watch and follow on the live feed.....couldn't agree more with you Jamie there was some bizarre support and comments been thrown around there!

See you all next year for sure!

K1 paddlers
written by nell, December 03, 2008
Great to see the sport of surfski racing graced with the presence of flatwater giants like Busto Fernandez, Lawler, Brabants, La**en, Wallace. Their individual results in this race weren't important - as it's not their specialty. But to note that they took the interest and time to race in Dubai honors the sport of surfski racing and also the top ski paddlers. This might herald the rise in interest on the European continent and the end of SA/Aus "total" domination in the coming years. It will all be good for the sport.

Rubbing shoulders with the greats
written by Rob Mousley, December 03, 2008
One of the other great things about this race was the opportunity to meet & chat with such great names - Gold, Silver, Bronze AND 4th place were there from Beijing 1000m K1... Unbelievably friendly, great guys all.

And chatting to them afterwards, they all said what a hard race it was, but that they'd be back. I asked Sistiaga Ekaitz (Spain) how it had gone and he said it worst race of his life... I asked him if he'd be back. "OH YES! And next time we spend more time training on the sea."

A great trip; it was a privilege to be there.

Congrats Busto!!!!
written by nicole, December 04, 2008
I believe that this first try on a surfski race was a great experience to you!!! I hope you have enjoyed!!. For the asturians, you have been a fantastic competitor, we feel so proud of you. I'm sure this competition has been really tough but next year you will do it better. To be nine times world champion has to give you the enough strength to face a future challenge. Keep doing!!!
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to the australians and south africans for let us enjoy with your effort and competitive spirit.
See you next year at Shamaal 2009!!!
