Andy kicks off...] This year’s Nelo Summer Challenge was always going to be a tempting event for the Brit surf ski contingent. Cheap flights to Porto, warm weather and a 10km downwind race for 2010 added to the round the cans action of 2009 saw a good number of us head out to chance our pasty white arms against some of the best in the world.
The second day of the US Surfski Championships event is supposed to be a laid-back: a doubles race followed by a fun relay. But, “Fark this was exhausting just to watch the sprint finish!” said the irrepressible Rambo who captured the moment on video.

One of the benefits of being associated with Surfski.info is that one gets to paddle lots of new skis often before examples appear on the water or in the local paddle shops.
Custom Kayaks recently released a new entry in the beginner’s surfski market – the Horizon. The name was inspired by the idea of novice paddlers expanding their “horizons”… So, does this ski lend itself to doing just that?
I have had the opportunity to spend some time with an Epic V12 this spring. The following is a review of that ski plus additional uninvited and personally biased commentary.

Many people are familiar with Tom Schilperoort as a top surfski paddler – both locally and internationally. But not so many know of his other passion in life: painting.
Sam Dawson was catching waves in his Fenn Mako XT at a favourite spot near South Sound, Grand Cayman. Suddenly his world turned upside down - literally. “I got caught by a wave and flipped off,'' Dawson said. “The wave took the surf ski away from me - I assumed never to be seen again.”

The art of mastering surfski paddling is in learning to balance. The ocean is never flat and even on the calmest days there are bumps out at sea or waves breaking on the shore. Balance is absolutely crucial to your performance, whether you’re a novice or a pro.
