Fastest Millers Run of All Time

What would happen,” I thought, “if we put the current surfski world champion onto a double with one of the best downwind paddlers of all time?”

Downwind with Oscar Chalupsky ** Video **

The ski tilted forward and I felt an overwhelming urge to accelerate my cadence so that we’d catch the run, but “Timing!” growled the big man up front.  “Take it easy!”  I was paddling with one of world’s greatest downwind paddlers and it was proving to be a fascinating (and surprising) experience.

Summertime is Surfski Time - in Italy

Summer is now in full blast and the early exit of Italy from the World Cup; Valentino Rossi’s injury; Ferrari’s F1 woes and the Berlusconi sexual shenanigans have all been put aside and the Italians are making their way to the beach... and surfskis are being tried out and used more and more often.

New Millers Run Video

Wednesday afternoon and I’m sitting at my desk watching the live data from the weather station on Roman Rock lighthouse.  It’s 15m/s SE (30kt or thereabouts)...  I sneak out of the office early...

Gale Force Downwind

I've been fortunate enough to play in some very strong winds recently - and on Saturday I had another chance to experience a downwind paddle in a gale.

Millers Run - without the fun

ImageFalse Bay was covered in breaking 2m waves and the wind, already 30kts, seemed to be strengthening.  But the worst problem was that it was already almost dark.

And as I paddled into Fish Hoek at the end of what should have been a classic downwind run, I was frantic with worry - I was almost certain that one of the group was off his ski, in the water, about ten kilometres back near Millers Point.

Millers Run: Memories

Image[Editor: Paul Mauger sent us this great piece about the origins of the Millers Run - one of the perennial favourite downwind routes here in Cape Town, South Africa.  Paul now lives in Australia and runs the Currumbin Creek Surf Ski series on the East Coast]

There seems to be quite a bit of news and such surrounding the Millers Run at the moment, what with the Garmin Challenge, youngest paddler etc. It occurred to me that some of the more recent paddlers may be wondering who started the whole Millers Run thing.

Milnerton Downwind

Image

A black southeaster hit Cape Town this weekend and the 30kt wind on Saturday afternoon was perfect for a downwind.

Two unidentified paddlers were spotted leaving Milnerton beach, clearly for a Milnerton to Big Bay run...  Elsa Lourens took the photos.
